Wow--HCL giving a GOP convention speech in 1960. I'm really impressed with the guy.
Seems like a very decent man--and a Republican. It's a little hurtful, even as a Democrat, to see that one of our parties has been taken over by crazies.
And the Gore speech is great too!

The two faced off in what was said to be one of the most memorable and legendary senate races in history. It was said to be incredibly respectful and statesmanlike. Both candidates were quite progressive and respected in the state. I've also heard that JFK actually ran as the conservative candidate, although I should caution that I heard that from a Conservative, so it could just be a right-wing lie.
The amazing thing is that HCL and JFK ended the race with both their reputations enhanced. The fact that HCL was able to run for Vice President despite having lost his senate seat shows how respected he remained in the country. He went on to serve as UN ambassador before being picked as Nixon's running mate.
