Before I go to bed, I want to leave you with this
In 1992, my whole world fell apart.

I was lonely, broke and my 8-year relationship abruptly came to an end (as well as our wedding plans).

I was never into politics, having never given it much thought.

I was living in El Paso, Texas, where the weather is still quite warm into the months of November and December.

One night, it suddenly got very cold. I had to scramble to get my houseplants in. The cold was accentuated by a very harsh wind and rain.

I settled down, and turned on the television.

There she was, a black woman speaking ever so eloquently about "change".

The winds of change.

This speech changed my life:

2. Barbara Jordan Was The BEST !!!
They did a replay of one of her convention speeches tonight, and my Mom looks at me and says, "I would have voted for that woman if she ever ran for President."

Me too.

Love ya Cat!!!

3. God, I remember her speaking at the convention so well...
She was my hero starting in 1973. When she spoke on Nixon's impeachment committee, she spoke with the authority of God. She was magnificent and made me so proud to share her Democratic party affiliation. I also remember her convention speech in 1992.

I was 22 when Jimmy Carter was inaugurated. My biggest disappointment with Carter's administration was the fact that Barbara Jordan was not appointed Attorney General. She deserved it and would have been a spectacular choice, Instead, we got crusty old Griffin Bell.

But, it could have been...

4. Bush plagiarised Barbara Jordan!
"We seek to unite people, not divide them."

That little thief. Steal a woman's words, a man's votes, someone else's country...sheesh.

5. Remembering Barbara Jordan
I remember watching Barbara Jordan's funeral -- it was broadcast on Houston TV -- and her pastor said she once said ..."Be careful climbing the ladder of success.. lest you get to the top and find yourself on the wrong building."

Most people don't know how funny Barbara was. And that she played a mean guitar! What an incredible woman.

6. What a truly wonderful woman.... thanks for bringing that recording
to my attention. I bookmarked it to listen tomorrow, as I'm just spent tonight. But, I expect the great late Barbara J will light my inner fire, yet again.

Truly a remarkable woman.....

8. Jordan was beyond incredible
My admiration for her is deep and wide, indeed. What a rare gift she had for speaking, and an intellect that matched her booming voice.

For anyone who is cynical about politics or politicians, and doubt they can make a difference for the better, I give you Exhibit A: Barbara Jordan.

I saw that speech, and I just nominated it for one of the best of all time at a convention in a poll I posted before I saw your thread!

Oh how I miss the Texas Democrats of yesteryear. Actually We are are all still here and simply dormant and waiting to sieze the opportunities in the near future to reclaim Our once proud state from the fundie fascists that control the Texas GOP.
