Stance on war splits Democrats

SNIP--->

By Peter S. Canellos, Globe Staff  |  July 26, 2004

The Democratic Party yesterday prepared to begin its convention under an unusually broad, shining umbrella of unity, but with some strains and cracks showing over the most volatile issue of the election year, the war in Iraq.

Unlike at past Democratic gatherings, even the most vociferous factions arriving in Boston seemed determined to concentrate their energies on defeating President Bush, whose policies have deeply alienated most party loyalists, from moderate ''New Democrats" to the leftist fringe.

3. Then you haven't been paying attention friend
Look around here, go digging through the archives. Many of the people here, and in the real world, are pissed off at the Democrats, and for good reason. The party has become a corporate whore, and the state of affair is so bad that BOTH parties are running candidates who promise to continue an illegal, immoral war in a country that posed no threat to the US.

Domestic issues are further dividing the party. While the leadership continues it's swing to the right, pro corporate position that was formerly the province of the 'Pugs, leftists are left wondering who represents them.

The ONLY issue that is uniting the Dems at this point in time is to get Bush out of office. I expect to see a schism develop whether or not Kerry wins. Leftists are going to go Green, or drop out altogether, while those following the banners of the DNC are going to wind up on the dust bin of history, for a party that neglects it's base is doomed to failure.

ABB may win the election, but it won't prevent the division of the party.

4. That's the problem with the two party system
There's no way that the Democratic party can represent EVERYBODY who's not a Republican. Of course there are going to be factions within the party. There's nothing wrong with that. Politics is about compromising, and since this system is an either/or situation, we must pick the candidate that BEST represents our own personal views.

7. I fully agree with you friend,
That is exactly how party politics should work. In fact that is exactly how Democratic party politics worked for a long, long time. However about twenty five years ago the party became increasingly autocratic, swinging to the right, and becoming ever more pro corporate. The leftist base of the party has been fighting the good fight ever since, trying to be heard and work for compromise within the party. But the leadership, who controls both the money and the direction of the party, have repeatedly refused to talk about compromise, instead opting to continue this rightward, pro-corporate nose dive.

That is why we are seeing the increasing numbers of Dems either dropping out altogether or caucasing with the Greens or other third parties. For much too long, the DNC/DLC has laughingly scoffed at the leftists with the tired old mantra of "who else you gonna vote for, Republicans? HAHAHA!" Well, the leftists HAVE found another option, and the DNC/DLC Dems are both scared and pissed. Not enough to come down off the mountain and work towards a compromise, but enough to start employing fearmongering and bully boy tactics. Perhaps getting their ass kicked a few more times will change their mind. Maybe not and they will fade into history. The choice is up to them.

5. The Dems are just being Dems.
When have they ever been united on anything? From Yankee liberal to Dixiecrat, from SDS to Tammany Hall, it's been a Will Rogers rodeo for 80 years.

6. That's the 'liberal media' for you...
... always helping cover for the Democrats.

Mr. Canellos, you'd be suprised how unified the Democrats are this year. We have are differences, but we all know what needs to be done.

CORPORATE MEDIA IS WORKING WITH ROVE TO DIVIDE THE DEMOCRATS.
Edited on Tue Jul-27-04 08:56 AM by blm
No surprise that they will focus on and exaggerate the tiny percentage who have thrown in with the anarchists and Nader to validate their worth to Rove.

Fock 'em. Tell 'em we ain't buying what they're selling.

8. Who's Divided?
Edited on Tue Jul-27-04 08:56 AM by impeachdubya
The GOP is sticking by it's 2 decade old inclusion of a Human Life Amendment plank in the platform that would criminalize all abortion, and make birth control pills illegal. Meanwhile, they've already slated as speakers Arnold, Rudy, and several other so-called "moderate" republicans who bear absolutely no relation, outside of a weird Kevin Bacon 6 Degrees sense, to the legislative and judicial agenda the GOP is pushing. I can assume that we will be hearing endless talk from the media about the "divided, inconsistent" GOP when their little charade begins..
