1. I'm surprised there aren't more replies to this thread.
This is POTENTIALLY huge. Is Kerry simply trying to one-up * on terrorism and the commission's recomendations, or...could we possibly see FURTHER INVESTIGATION under a Kerry administration?????

:bounce:

2. You know I kinda thought so too
Kerry spokeswoman Allison Dobson said Kerry would like the commission to keep working for the next 18 months or so, regularly assessing progress on its recommendations. She said Congress could extend the commission's authority or perhaps it could get funding from a private source.

3. Well, that makes it sound more like the former
(AND possibly the right thing to do--didn't mean to leave that option out :) ) but still...it leaves the door open.

12. It's a great idea and I'm all for it....
right up until: "or perhaps it could get funding from a private source"

Who will trust the findings of a privately funded commission? There are FAR too many powerful parties with interests to be served in this to allow even the possibility of futzing.

5. it is huge
I have felt there was a good chance Kerry would not settle for the 9-11 whitewash report. He was in charge of Iran-Contra investigation and is well known for being a digger when it comes to stuff like this.

I take it as code for "I'm not satisfied with what came out and when I'm president, we'll find the real truth". Of course he can't say that right now...

6. I just heard that * may sign some of the recommendations this week.
(one week ago he was very loathe to endorse the recommendations)

Is * doing this:
A) To overshadow the convention
B) To one-up Kerry on terror
C) To shut the commission down ASAP
D) All of the above

This could get VERY interesting!

On CNN now.

8. All of the above
and also, to utilize this work of fiction to hammer some more nails in the coffin of freedom.

it would be great if our leaders would respond to the truth of 9-11 with some appropriate steps. but until the truth is known and accepted, any actions taken are in response to disinformation and deception.

10. I agree.
I just listened to Kerry on CNN and he was wholeheartedly supporting quick implementation of the recommendations. I share your concerns.

I guess the political reality is winning out here. Kerry and * will use these recommendations to duke it out for the top "who is tougher on terror" spot.

I still like the 18 months business, though.

7. I hope so
I feel the results of the report were just a whitewash, and so wasn't the report on security, although another report on admiistration is suppose to be out AFTER the election.

9. Maybe Kerry will mention Riggs Bank
Jonthan Bush, money-laudering and funding terrorism in the same sentence.

11.  Riggs Bank - background
WaPo: Allbritton Loses Riggs Bank (front page, day 3)
Critics Say Allbritton Ruined Bank He Loved

By David Montgomery and Kathleen Day
Washington Post Staff Writers
Saturday, July 17, 2004; Page A01

(Mods, story has up to three headlines, posted head is the first clicker)

Joe L. Allbritton loved Riggs Bank to death.

The strong-willed Texan bought control of the beloved and storied Washington institution in 1981 at its peak of influence and prestige. The "bank of presidents" served 21 first families over the years, financed the purchase of Alaska and became the largest bank in the region.

Yesterday, Washington awoke to learn that after more than 160 years, the Riggs name will disappear, swallowed by PNC Financial Services Group Inc. Allbritton once dismissed such faceless financial conglomerates as "toothpaste banks" -- Crestar, Sovran -- and vowed never to sell out to one. But by yesterday he had no choice. His Riggs was no longer the largest or most important bank in the Washington area, and it was enveloped in a thickening cloud of scandal over failing to guard against money laundering and catering to dictators along with presidents.

Over the years, Allbritton's passionate devotion to "the Riggs" never flagged, nor did his strong personal intervention in the bank's direction or his cultivation of rarefied segments of the market -- embassies, trusts, private banking for the richest of the rich.

...

Two top bank regulators -- the Federal Reserve Board and the Treasury Department's Office of the Comptroller of the Currency -- recently began a targeted review of Joe Allbritton's activities at the bank and its holding company, Riggs National Corp., to see if he violated any laws and whether any civil fines or criminal referrals to the Department of Justice should be made, government sources familiar with the investigation said.

At issue is whether Allbritton was an active participant in the daily operations of the bank even though he has not been a director or executive of the bank for three years, the sources said. If regulators determine he was an active participant, then he could face fines or other sanctions, government sources said.
