HaHa--Nancy Reagan To Skip Republican Convention
http://tnr.com/blog/dnc?pid=1849

Republicans "don't seem too bothered by the fact that presidential son Ron Reagan will address the Democratic convention tonight. They're clearly more troubled, however, by the fact that Reagan's mother, Nancy, apparently won't be speaking at theirs," Michael Crowley reports.

Said RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie this morning: "I do not expect her at our convention."

1. I love to read posts like this
Maybe they'll substitute some Reagan coffin footage and run it in a video loop behind the Chimperor when he accepts the nomination - y'know, just to remind everyone how CLOSE and FRIENDLY the Bushes and Reagans always were.

9. A huge picture of Reagan and Bonzo would create the ...
subliminal message that the Gipper loves George the second. Come on Bonzo 'er George win one for Gipper!

2. Ron said on : "Fresh Air" that she'd been invited but declined.
Why would she want to hang around with those little pissants who want to feed off of her husband's legacy for their own self-aggrandisement?

6. it's a no brainer if she's serious about stem cell research
why speak for the party who is against one of your main goals?

20. It's not just that
There has always been a fair amount of animosity between the Reagan and Bush families. Mrs. Reagan always suspected Daddy Bush had a hand in the assassination attempt (considering they were close to the Hinckley family), and she may have a point.

I'd fall over in astonishment if she did speak in favor of Junior.

3. I never really cared much for her, but she's a smart cookie
She knows "they" manipulated Ronnie.. There was always talk about her being "overly protective"..I think she KNEW he was impaired...years before he "came out".. She saw how "they" manipulated him..

She knows manipulation when she sees it.. It's the SAME people..

"...She won't be fooled again..."

13. It's funny, isn't it, the way one can come around?
I think I've finally come around on the charm of Nancy Reagan... just about the time that she came around about the manipulation of images and sympathy from her side.

She had me when she nixed the "Reagan Dime."

Nancy, I'm really sorry, and I take bad every bad thing I said about you in the 80's. And, honestly, you really did look just smashing in those red dresses you favored! :D

4. I'll believe it when I (don't) see it.
Don't get too excited yet. Ed Gillepsie could be arranging a "surprise" visit to enthrall the delegates and garner media coverage. Their going to work on her day and night till she capitulates.

8. I give Nancy more credit than that... She has NEVER liked the Bushies*
and is strong enough (and always has been) not to be manipulated. Frankly I think her true leanings politically are much closer to Ron and Patti's, though she'd not admit it publically.

12. Babs certainly didn't like her-one of those upper-class things
People from Babs social class consider the Kennedys to be "new money" and anyone from Hollywood to be out of their class, no matter how much money he or she may have. It's like the Preppy Handbook world.

14. Maybe, but knowing her, she'll make Ed Gillespie/GOP crawl
on broken glass first - to lick Ron Jr's shoes.

7. now, that would be sweet indeed....
but, it's enough that Ron will be there and he won't be doing a <nudge nudge><wink wink> political speech... his presence is political enough!

and since Nancy has always hated the Bushies, her snubbing them comes as no surprise... but, the pubs will certainly revive the Ron-a-thon... what else do they have?

clips of * falling on his ass/face in an endless loop.....

10. Even if she wanted to personally I don't think she'd do it
out of respect for Ronnie and the fact he had no use for the Democratic Party. She is too loyal to his memory. Would have been a great surprise though.

15. Don't you think she might harbor some concern that Poppy is the one
who had the attempt made on her husband? GHW Bush's contempt for Reagan was very evident. The fact that so many really were fond of Reagan had to eally stick in his belly. The fact that Reagan beat him couldn't have been easy to take.

Name one Bush who can be a gracious loser. Nancy knows these guys. Strength to her as she takes care of her self. Strength to her to stand them down in their attempt to pimp her just like they do everyone else.

she is an elderly lady in the deep stages of grief afterall. But I am enthused! :bounce: It takes away from the RR beatification sure to come.

17. I never much cared for Nancy
But I have to admit that my opinion of her has softwened in the last month or so. Suddenly, she was no long the unapproachable "Ice Queen". Now, she was just a little old lady grieving for the man she clearly adored. She handled herself with class and dignity at the funeral, and I think that image will be with people for a long time.

Politically, however, Nancy is one shrewd cookie. Don't think for a minute that Ron didn't clear his speech to the DNC with Mommy. Considering her loathing for the Bush family, plus the Pubs stand on stem cell research, I think she knows exactly what she's doing. It may be too close to the funeral yet, but wouldn't the sight of the Kerrys paying a "Social Call" on Mrs Reagan in October just make Rove soil himself. There wouldn't even need to be any pictures of the event released, just a note on the campaign schedule. I know, I'm being TOO optimistic here.
