Picking Glenn Close to speak on 9-11 shows the Dems are tone deaf
No, it's not going to change a single vote for us or against us but what a stupid cringe inducing moment.

Hope it was the only one like it.

3. I've liked her movies.
I don't know what a Hollywood celebrity has to do with the 9-11 tragedy though. A weird juxtaposition, almost nauseating.

Not in NYC, but fairly close by just north of the city.

14. The convention is for public consumption
The celebrity of the "star" competes with the meaning of the tragedy. This could be off putting to the public as it was to me.

We all know the convention isn't oblivious to perceptions nor should it be.

Maybe it would be easier to understand the point if you imagined Jessica Simpson doing the speech. Yes there is a difference but only in degrees, in my view.

37. Although I think Glenn Close is fabulous,
I am totally dissapointed that they didn't ask Kristin Breitweiser to speak on 9/11, although maybe she was asked and declined. I can't imagine her turning them down tho. I'm hoping Glenn calls up all the acting skills she has to put this over the top, but.....

11. She was a New Yorker and a somber actor narrating appropriately.
There was no frivolity involved. Anyone who thinks there was needs a perspective adjustment.

Also, politicians are celebrities, too, by the public nature of their job.

27. No sense to you perhaps, but
I see a difference between a movie star and a politician. Politicans aren't celebs in the same way, their jobs involve issues and policy.

Unless the movie star is known for activism in a particular area I think they ought not be put front and center to address a topic if their movie acting is the only reason they are put there, which I believe was the case here.

40. I'm not saying she didn't narrate well but....
Can you deny that the gut reaction of a lot of people when it comes to mixing celebs and politics is, "what does that rich, frivolous dilettante know?" A reaction that's a mixture of envy, truth, experience, whatever depending on the celeb.

Most people don't bother to break down their gut reactions and analyze whether they're fair or not. They won't say to themselves, "Wait a minute. She's an American too, why shouldn't she speak...Why did I assume she was some pretentious know nothing movie star who is only up there because she is a movie star, when she might be very intelligent and educated and might have started a charity to benefit 9/11 victims for all I know?"

46. Dilettante? I believe she was a starving actress until she was about 27,
and that nobody is giving her money for nothing.

She works hard in her profession, she works hard for democrats, and she's a resident of NYC.

I didn't even notice that she was helping with the 9/11 thing, so I don't think she was doing much more than introducing and narrating, which is actually her profession -- so I'm glad they picked someone with experience.

If you're riding on good looks, or your parent's wealth, and you don't work hard at all, than I have better things to do with my time.

Close clearly falls into the former category.

24. Yes but a Celebrity-American
Believe it or not, some people are put off by movie stars being injected into a 9/11 tribute and in my view it shouldn't have been done unless the celeb were known for a huge activist contribution related to the issue.

13. She supported Edwards in NH. She worked hard to earn her status...
...as a great actress.

She's the essense of what it means to be a democrat: working hard and succeeding, and caring about politics.

She also introduced a bunch of women senators. It was totally appropriate.
