And you can be divisive next Tuesday. And you can be angry and argumentative and disrespectful and polarizing and cynically critical without being able to formulate any suggestion for a better way anytime next week. I'll be here and you can do that until you're blue in the face.

But this week is a week for the rest of us in the Democratic party - even those of us progressives with uneasy and tennative alliances to look for the good, and see the hopeful and look towards the proactive vision for the future. that even at my age (I'm not old, but not a spring chicken anymore either), I have a real rage just barely concealed beneath my projected facade. I have vacillated between being very sad and almost uncontrollably angry for the duration of this monstrosity of an administration. I don't know what else to do but be active in the political scene, the alternative would be to watch a once great nation destroy itself, and for what? For the sake of our modern version of the Golden Calf, redefined as the almighty dollar? The whole scene just makes me ill. Many of my family members have ostracized me (including my wife, who is filing the necessary papers to make her various objections legal) for what they perceive as an overreaction to the current situation. I persist in reminding them of Martin Niemoller's statements after WWII, and that we could very well be at the point in history where we have to decide to get off our collective butts and recover whatever we can of OUR country. We had such promise, once, we could still recover and end up being much, much better than we are. Keep the faith, and here's a electronic toast to a Kerry/Edwards administration in January. It's just a choice. I choose to be committed to a party who DOES have a legacy to be proud of, who has a history of patriots worthy of remembering. And while I do feel that the political pressures of modern times have cause some of our leadership to compromise to much toward the center, I do not believe that its worth giving up on. It is possible to be progressive and democratic. And the only way to guarantee that the party is never the strong and courageous voice of progressive ideals and opposition to tyranny that we want to see is by everyone giving up and bailing out... choosing instead to sit on the sidelines and bitch about everything and do nothing.

I have to agree, this week is for the Democrats. The convention is excellent and the speeches fantastic. I watch on C-Span so I don't hear the foolish media. The speakers are sending uplifting and energizing messages and for four days we get to hear positive voices. I am enjoying watching the convention without the normal bs - it's refreshing!
