6. Whew!
Being a recent Chicago transplant, I'm eager to see what the fuss is about. All I've seen of the guy are a few soundbites on local TV news; everybody I know says he kicks ass, though.

I used to live in Illinois and will be moving back to the area after the election. Obama is the real deal, and he just *might* help to re-energize the vision that America used to have.

No need to work in the garden tonight, m'man. :)

139. He'll be our *third* Dem Senator!
I once thought that, if he lost the Senate race, he could always come back here and run for Governor. (For those just tuning in, he was born in Honolulu and, like so many other of our most promising young people, joined the "brain drain" and settled on the mainland after college.) Now, obviously, that will not happen, so I guess we'll have to find someone else who's better than Lingle (R), like maybe the cashier at the Jack in the Box up the street.

162. Almost
Born in Kansas, grew up in Hawaii and Thailand.

Not meaning to nitpick, he would make any state proud, but he settled here in Illinois.

Do I sound selfish? Sorry if that's the case. I Thank everywhere he lived and had an influence on him.

Obama watch

Barack Obama, the Democratic senate-nominee-turned-political-star, continues on an amazing roll, appearing as a guest on no fewer than three network television interview shows, aired lived from Boston on Sunday in advance of his Tuesday keynote speech.

So what are his handlers doing to keep the mega-dose of fame from going to the head of the man who—at the moment—is still only a state senator? Mr. Obama gives most of the credit to his wife Michelle and her cracks about his "big ears" and "shiny nose."

Just living life helps too, adds Mr. Obama, noting that 48 hours earlier, he was driving from Chicago to Springfield and back again with only one aide, dining on a Subway sandwich.

Media consultant David Axelrod gives most of the credit to the candidate himself. "Barack told me once, 'When I lived in Hawaii, I learned the tide comes in and the tide comes out.' "

Mr. Obama learned something else in Hawaii, Mr. Axelrod adds: "When the wave comes in you ride it."

Barack Obama knows his background is about as unconventional as Illinois voters will probably ever see in a Senate candidate. He was born in Hawaii, the son of a Kenyan economist and a white mother from Kansas, and spent four years of his childhood in Indonesia. His last name rhymes with Osama. So he begins every campaign speech with the question on the audience's mind: "How does a skinny guy with a funny name win an election?"

We have a name for what happens when our very best young people leave for greater opportunities on the mainland -- the "brain drain". I hereby nominate (Sen.) Barack Obama for the title of "Mr. Brain Drain 1979".

Edit: Bolding.

57. Including Bush
Jan Schakowsky told me about a recent visit she had made to the White House with a congressional delegation. On her way out, she said, President Bush noticed her “obama” button. “He jumped back, almost literally,” she said. “And I knew what he was thinking. So I reassured him it was Obama, with a ‘b.’ And I explained who he was. The President said, ‘Well, I don’t know him.’ So I just said, ‘You will.’”

According to Obama we can be patriotic and be for the war in Iraq.

He didn't even touch on our squandered good will around the world. Apparently national strength trumps good will in the Democratic party these days.

Disappointing.

He has been against the war from the start and in his campaign, he has articulated those beliefs. However, I think Carter, Gore, and Kennedy before him have made that point.

138. What an incredible speech! Obama speaks to the humanity in everyone.
What a contrast with the dark worldview of bush and cheney. Like JFK, Obama makes the listener have hope for the future and belief that we can find the good in all of us. This was a fantastic performance under tremendous pressure on the national stage.

How was he not on after 10 pm when the networks join in the coverage? What could they have been thinking? Poor Ron Reagan, having to follow Obama.

147. I have watched every Democratic keynote speech since 1956.
JFK blasted onto the national stage with his keynote address in '56. As an 11 year old, I remember literally jumping up and down on the living room sofa with excitement at what he said, how he said it, and what he represented. I have not seen a keynote to equal that amazing performance until today.

Barack Obama measured up to JFK's incredible speech in every way. I firmly believe he will one day be a great President.

And I am SO proud to live in Illinois ... and to have the thrill of knowing that this man is every bit as terrific in person as he looks. WOW!

168. Michael Jordan meets William Jennings Bryan
I covered Obama's (unsuccessful) campaign for Congress in 2000, when he came off as a self-important, insincere stiff. Since then, I've watched him develop into a hard-working legislator and an electrifying orator. When I watched him tonight, I was thinking, "This is what it felt like the night Michael Jordan scored 63 points against the Celtics." A great talent playing to the limit of his potential.

Could this have been the most important convention speech since William Jennings Bryan's "Cross of Gold"?

What do you think made the switch for him? After seeing him tonight, I can't imagine ever seeing fit to call Obama "insincere" or a "stiff". WHAT a fantastic performance. Your invoking of the Jordan performance is, incredibly, not hyperbole. This was a career-maker tonight. He was absolutely brilliant. If anyone had a prayer of following Clinton as a keynoter, it had to be Obama.

Illinois, you should be proud, just as we are proud of John Edwards in North Carolina!

183. How Obama Turned It Around
He was running in a majority-black district, trying too hard to be a "black" candidate. It was embarrassing to hear him talk about "Keeping it real." This year, he came to speak at a restaurant in my extremely multi-racial neighborhood, and packed the place. His genius is that he transcends racial categories, not that he embodies any one in particular.

In Springfield, he stopped talking so much about Harvard Law School and learned that pomposity doesn't attract co-sponsors for bills. He buckled down and learned how to work with his colleagues to pass legislation. One statehouse reporter told me that other legislators used to smirk at the name Obama. Now they respect him. As he put it, "He's really turned it around."

(But he still won't drop that corny joke about people pronouncing his name "Yo Mama" or "Alabama.")

212. Obama has more presence than Bill Clinton at that age
Certainly Barack Obama will be a force to be reckoned with.

I expect the Pugs to go after Obama about his experimental drug use as a teenager, as documented in his autobiography (“I guess you’d have to say I wasn’t a politician when I wrote the book,” .... “I wanted to show how and why some kids, maybe especially young black men, flirt with danger and self-destruction.”)

http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/?040531fa_fact1

Personally I don't give a rat's ass about his teenage experimentation. Obama obviously concluded drug use leads to nowhere and he went and graduated from college with distinction, got accepted to Harvard Law School (how about that, Dubya?) and made president of the Law Review. Dubya couldn't even buy his way into the Law Review, much less the school.

We need to keep beaming Obama up until he's at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue!

Bowled over like everyone else. We are the United States of America. Yes sir.

Barack obviously idolizes MLK; one the greatest figures in American history. The cadence and structure and structure of this speech were unmistakably borrowed from Martin. And he blended his message of common humanity with enough early 21st century toughness and realism to make the whole package credible. It was political and rhetorical genius--and completely sincere.

I can't help but feel that this man could be the best thing to happen to our party since JFK. He is that impressive.

He knows how to talk to people, how to make a point. He's really tremendous.

225. Time out, everyone! :)
I thought Obama was terrific, too, but let's not nominate him for POTUS just yet. It was one speech - admittedly a great speech beautifully delievered, but just one speech. He has no credentials (yet) to be anything other than a candidate for the US Senate. (That didn't stop Dubya, I know.)

Building him up too fast just makes him a premature target for the right wing (which, if they're smart, will try to kill him with kindness).

He's not THE future of the Democratic Party. He's just one hopeful - unquestionably more talented than most and more attractive than just about all, but give him time - what if he truly does not WANT to be president? He's got to find his own way without all of us piling our hopes and dreams on his skinny back.

Still, it certainly was an electrifying speech, and he's clearly a rising star. He's going to own Illinois. Did you hear Al Franken pretending to be a would-be opponent of Obama's trying to convince his wife to let him run? Great stuff.

229. He more than surpassed the hype
Beautiful man, beautiful speech. Makes one ashamed to have given up hope(okay that was yesterday everyday is a new day!). I want a copy of that speech.

I was also sad that his parents are already dead. He's only 43. They should get to see his success.

If you didn't cry or feel hope or cheer during that speech, I say you aren't really an American. He is America.

230. I'm glad I got a chance to meet him and shake his hand
back when he was a relative unknown running for the Dem primary. Common wisdom was that Dan Hynes, the well-funded foot soldier for the Dem machine would win. Barack must have hit every ward meeting in Chicago, every county board meeting in downstate--he worked his ass off. A friend of mine "won" a lunch with Obama at a fundraiser, and said that he was the most gracious, intelligent politician he had ever met.

236. Amazing
Man, was I impressed by this guy. He seems so passionate and sincere. I'm sure he had some remarks prepared, but it just seemed like the words flowed so effortlessly, that he had to be speaking from the heart. We need more people like this on our side.
