I have never heard anything like that speech
Edited on Tue Jul-27-04 09:14 PM by DancingBear
in any political convention.

Ever.

It was absolutely poetic, righteous, moving, truthful - the adjectives fail.

It was a brilliant piece of oratory from a man who at some point, without question, will be standing with his hand on a Bible on a cold day in January in the nations capitol.

I have never been prouder to be a Democrat than I am right now.

1. No shit.
I'd been wondering who this Obama character was, having recently moved to Chicago and hearing the rumbling.

Now I know. This guy's got the "glow."

we'll be hearing some nasty stuff dug up by the repugs soon... from the dark zone. perhaps he didn't pay a parking ticket or his thrice removed niece got caught trying to get into a bar under age....

9. From what I remember reading on DU.....
Jack Ryan's people were following him around with a camera crew every minute of the campaign, waiting for Obama to slip up somewhere.

Next thing we know, Jack Ryan's dropped out because the press found out he's a mysoginist bondage freak.

Amazing the powers of projection these conservatives have: they always imagine their opponents are as fucked up as they are.

Even if they dig up some dirt, it ain't gonna stick: Obama's the man.

but you KNOW they'll try to bring it up

I really hope they do THIS time, cause you know where it SHOULD lead

maybe that's why they haven't mentioned it so far

16. Yup, that's why Obama said straight up that he did drugs as a teen
He said he smoked marijuana and tried cocaine. Why the hell should he lie about it? Maybe his experience can help us move beyond our idiotic punitive response to drug abuse.

3. Then you must have missed Jesse Jackson in 1988
Edited on Tue Jul-27-04 09:19 PM by Rowdyboy
His "American Quilt" speech sent chills down my back, and tears to my eyes. It was absolutely magnificent, and I was not a particular fan of Rev Jackson at that time.

on edit: This is in no way meant to disparage Rep Obama's speech. It was brilliantly conceived and eloquently delivered, easily the equal of "American Quilt".

11. No, I didn't miss it

I thought of it during Obama's speech, actually.

Jackson is/was an orator/minister of long standing. His speech was as expected. This one was not.

Therein lies the difference, at least to me.

18. The one I liked was the 1984 Rainbow Coalition Speech at the convention
Jackson, the candidate, was on fire like no one I ever saw before. It was the most dramatic, spine-chilling, thrilling speech I ever heard. "Well must all come up together" "We must all come up together" he kept repeating at one point.

But Obama's speech, while less forceful and emotional, was nonetheless inspiring. I'm confident it is just the beginning of many thrilling moments we will have in hearing Obama.

20. sorry about the repetitive posts
I'm having trouble with DU tonight. I'm getting a message telling me my posts are not going through. Then moments later I see them both appear. Less than a minute after posting, I tried to go in to edit and mark one post as deleted, but I'm getting a message that editing time has expired.
Sorry about that.

21. I remember that speech.
Jesse looked out to the front row (a spot reserved for disabled folks) and said (paraphrasing) we see you and will not forget you.

I was sitting with my partner, Jim, who was dying, and I will never forget that one moment.

22. I remember that speech.
I was sitting with my partner who was dying of AIDS and for the first time I heard a national figure address us, as he spoke to the crowd and said (I paraphrase) we see you and will not forget you. I'll never forget that moment.

8. This is not a one shot speech for Obama. Every time I hear him speak
he gives one the same feelings.

He is going to be good for our country.

10. I don't know if you'd call it a political convention...
But the last time I heard that fire and determination was back in the sixties when it was being said by the Black Panther Party in Oakland, California. I had great hope for them back then, I have even more for the skinny guy with the funny name.

12. You brought me to tears.
I've been crying ALL day! First the honoring of Fannie Mae Hamer...her story made we weep from shame. Then, Maya Angelou and her beautiful words and the song..."That little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine." OMG...I lost it again. Then, Mike Honda and his story about his family being put in a Japanese internment camp...he's a survivor of a Japanese internment camp. Again, I cried my eyes out from shame. Then, Obama. My G-d. My heart....the tears won't stop. Obama is hope. Obama will surely be our President some day. Thank You for your lovely words. They are so true. :loveya:

17. DancingBear - I can't agree with you more
I was driving home from work, anticipating watching the rest of the convention live, and hoping that my tivo had worked it's magic. I turned on the radio in hopes of catching some news about tonights speeches. Imagine my delight when I happened on a station that was just about to play his speech. OK, so I had to listen to Larry King for a few minutes before, but it was well worth it.

I found myself sitting in my driveway, not wanting his speech to end, tears slowly dripping down my face.

I rushed into the house at the end, in hopes of getting a glimpse of the guy that I thought could finally break the color barrier to become the first president of color in history.

Please, oh please, let it be him and let it be in my lifetime!!
