1. I wonder how holy Joe would feel....
...if it were HIS son.

My guy is a Vietnam veteran. His parents were so afraid that he would not make it back that to this day, his father thinks he is a wonder man.

2. I just heard that too...
...now blithering on about the "contacts" between SH and AQ. Boy, that's the way to differentiate the Dems from the Administration, Joe. That's the way to make Bush&Co. look bad. Why don't we just re-elect them, then, Joe, since they were so right?

3. I'm watching it, too.....
Joe L. is one of the few democrats that I strongly dislike. That statement doubled my sense of abhorrence at the charade .... he is closer to a bush republican than 90% of registered republicans.

I find that the idea of a draft to support this "war president's" goals is one of the best campaigning issues with people my age, with sons and/or nephews in their late teens.

4. LOL! Don't the radical muslims make a similar argument?
Its O.K. to blow yourself up in a crowded square because you'll be a hero, a martyr and go to heaven. LOL! What a twisted demented place we live in.

6. send Joe to the front lines..he can replace our kid
smarmy moron. Nothing more tiresome then a priledged politician sitting in his/her cushy leather chair sipping brandy and playing with other people's lives.
Chickenhawk. He needs a reality check. Put him in a room with the mothers of the soldiers. Give us 10 minutes with him.

8. God, I hate that man
I have never liked Lieberman. If you are going to be a Democrat, at least have some of the same policies that the Dems do instead of trying to limit our freedoms like he does.

Lieberman being on the ticket was why so many here didn't vote for Gore.

11. It's not o.k for your son
(or for that matter your daughter) to die in Iraq or anywhere else for a trumped up cause. Joe Liberman is a sleaze who doesn't deserve to be called a Democrat.

12. When you ask these people
if they could avoid a war if they gave up their car they would keep their car.
IF they are told they could avoid war by moving to a smaller home they would say no.

But when asked if they would sacrifice their son to keep their car and home they would do so in the name of God and patriotism.

As you see it is not about God or patriotism, it is money and comfort over the life of their child.

13. A soldier's honor
knows no flag or creed. Enemies have more in common from the joint experience than with their own communities. Nor is this the only occupation crossing such proprietary boundaries in utter scorn. No what is the bystander who "gratefully" honors the brave it sent or lazily allowed to step into the ultimate horror, the greatest moral and physical and mental dangers? In WWI the rising tide of scorn for all soldiers of the front for the patriots behind the lines was pretty absolute and frightening. Too bad more did not make it back home and the survivors weakened to the manipulations of political sentiment.

Did they expect to be ceremonial icons for the enjoyment and dramatic pathos of the purposely ignorant civilian? Icons hidden like dead gods in flag draped boxes, local testimonials to aid the family's grief? Or did they expect to be somebody, trimphant heroes out of story books, embodiments of some real accomplishment not just a cult of death and shrines.

A newspaper recently celebrated the coming harvest of new wheat. On the right was their latest Iraq war casualty who will never see that harvest. He was harvested already by Mars, not a Christian God. Was there a connection made? Was it understood? There is one for whom the question is forever academic. And others could better show solidarity by sharing that tragic silence and learn to keep their mouths shut when wars should have, could have been stopped, when Walrus sentiment is a disingenuous opiate for a simple needless tragedy.

Soldiers have their own honor. They don't need Lieberman. Only those surviving families weak with grief are afflicted with the crutches offered by those "luminaries" repairing their own political standing, enjoying their cultic emotions remote from the vast evil that is war.

Expecting the simple families to make grateful obeisance to the war herders like good feudal vassals does not work though. Like soldiers they respond with anger or with true dignity.
