Obama's speech was a stake in the heart of the Bush strategy ?
Because Bush is dependent on this nation being divided. Divide and conquer is their strategy. God forbid that anyone mention bringing the nation together. The message is so powerful amongst many Democratic and Republican households. It has power. In fact, it has the power to defeat George W Bush and he knows it. And it must be very troubling to Karl Rove and the machine. As the Bush team works on its new commercials down in Texas this week, one might predict that Bush will re-emerge as a "uniter" - not a divider.

3. I only wish the speech was slotted for the networks to cover!
The majority of swing voters if tuning in at all were most likely watching the network coverage that began at 10pm EST. I fully agree with you that it was a powerful message - one that all should hear!

9. How much of the Repub message will be excluded at their Convention?
The people have not received the big picture of the Democratic Convention, in my opinion.

4. Yep! Obama is making a big impact!
Here's what one fundie said:

Now, if he can inspire blacks to forgo the party of handouts and show them how to go to Harvard, like he did, and make it without welfare, like he did, and talk and act like he does, as Bill Cosby recommends, then the blacks of our country will surely be free (and conservative, too!)

Is that not racist? I'd say so!

10. Bill Clinton started this beautifully on Monday night, Obama carried
on... I think its a wonderful theme, and one we must repeat, like a mantra, over and over again.

They want to divide us, we want to unite us.

Bush promised to be a uniter -- anyone see that happening? Instead, the country is horribly divided. They need it to be that way; we don't.

I really think this is the point we need to keep stressing over and over again!

13. Wedge Politics....
Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 09:01 AM by Junkdrawer
It was how Bush got a blank check for Iraq...

It was the motivation behind the Anti Gay Marriage constitutional amendment...

It's why the GOP backs Nader...

Etc, etc, etc.

And just look at the trolls that infest this site day-in and day-out. They poke and they prod until they find an issue that divides us and then they hammer it.

Honestly, I've never seen any group use wedge politics more than the modern NeoCons. It's about time they were called on it.

16. Obama was a brilliant choice
Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 10:04 AM by pse517
He gave an excellent speech that even caught the RW hack spin doctors off guard. They didn't have their negative talking points ready on Obama and that allowed him to make a good first impression and a good impression for the Democrats. Picking a fresh face to give the keynote address was a great idea. He spoke to people's hopes and he had credibility doing so. People are dying for somebody to come along who gets it like he does. They're waiting for a leader who finally makes things right and fulfills this country's promise. Obama's speech gave us a sense of that possibility for a moment. He even preempted the attacks from spin doctors and tapped into a desire that I think most Americans have to raise political discourse above that of the hacks in the mainstream media. He went over their heads, refused to speak in their language, and spoke directly to the people. To be sure, those same RW hacks will be working overtime to take the glow off of Obama, drag him through the mud, and label him as something that is alien to "mainstream values." But last night their forcefield of bullshit was down for a moment and he got through and reached Americans and stirred what is best in them. I gotta believe that something good will come of that.

I've had "The Day John Kennedy Died" by Lou Reed in my head ever since hearing that speech.

I dreamed I was the president of these United States
I dreamed I replaced ignorance, stupidity and hate
I dreamed the perfect union and a perfect law, undenied
And most of all I dreamed I forgot the day John Kennedy died
I dreamed that I could do the job, that others hadn't done
I dreamed that I was uncorrupt and fair to everyone
I dreamed I wasn't gross or base, a criminal on the take
And most of all I dreamed I forgot the day John Kennedy died
Oh the day John Kennedy died...

I dreamed I was the president of these United States
I dreamed I was young and smart and it was not a waste...

17. Obama must have read "What's The Matter With Kansas."
It talks a lot about how the RW exploits a "two Americas strategy." To paraphrase the Big Dog, they NEED a divided America.
