DU! What do you think of an attack on the administration that runs thus:

We went to war in Iraq because a handful of neo-cons in and close to the administration, including the President and Vice President, were taken in by a two-bit flim-flam man in a thousand dollar suit: Ahmed Chalabi.

It's just one line of attack and one Kerry and Edwards can't really use but political organizations associated with the left or progressive politics (Moveon.org, are you listening?) could exploit. They could, if they wanted more than a sound bite, even explore WHY the flim flam man was so successful: he did what every grifter does, exploit the rube's greed or desires. He saw the STRONG predispossion toward a war with Iraq and realized that this predisposition would keep the administration from loooking too critically at the evidence.

Moveone.org, are you listening????

2. I even give the administration credit for
cutting ties with Chalabi so publically and dramatically (Fox News flush with talking points, etc.). Rove MUST have seen the political vulnerability (that we might take the line of attack sketched out above). But we desperately needed the UN at that point, and the head of the Iraq UN oversight committee was vehemently anti-Chalabi. Also, Chalabi had been clearly identified as a fraud by then and the administration thought the story might be better if they broke it (really "pushed," since it had been bantied about for a bit in the press). It appears they were right.

But just because they did the right thing in publically dismissing Chalabi, doesn't mean we shouldn't exploit it. After all, they HAD BEEN TAKEN by this character and such a gullibility speaks directly to their fitness for office.
