Gary Doers big fat embarrassing gay wedding!
Manitoba premier Gary Doer won't be attending the upcoming wedding in British Columbia of one of his senior staff members. He claims a previous engagement, which is fortunate for him because its a same sex marriage. I say fortunate, because if he went, he might have to deal with some uncomfortable questions about why it's legal in BC, and NOT his home province of Manitoba.
The reason his senior staff member can't be married in Manitoba? Because Doer hasn't instructed the director of Vital Statistics to register same-sex marriages, as Ottawa says he should.
EVERY appeal court in EVERY Canadian jurisdiction that has heard the Charter's(Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms) equal-rights argument has ruled IN FAVOUR of same sex marriage. The governments of Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia and the Yukon have already complied.
90% of Canadians, give or take, can get married to someone of the same sex in their home provinces.
I guess it *would* be a little embarrassing to show up at the wedding, hmmm?
The Manitoba governments position is if they ordered Vital Statistics to register same sex marriages, it would have no basis in law and could be challenged in court. So, the Doer government is basically inviting any Manitoban same-sex couple to use the Charter challenge in court, so it WILL have a basis in law.... Big effing difference.
As Gordon Sinclair of the Winnipeg Free Press said, the government is treating gay and lesbian couples the way a certain male-only private club in Winnipeg used to treat women. Eventually women were allowed to enter. But only through the side door.
Doer is being 'politically gutless'.

Doer can be reached at premier@leg.gov.mb.ca, phone (204)945-3714, fax (204)949-1484

I for one am going to be letting him know what I think of his policy... or lack of.

1. in B.C. ...
One of Premier Campbell's cabinet members had a same-sex wedding last year -- and was dropped from cabinet. They claim there was no connection, but I wonder.
