Letter to the editor.
I just sent this to the editor of the opinion section of our local newspaper. I have no idea if it will get published at this point. Any suggestions on this article, or on writing for publication in general? Well, here it is:
*********************************************
It is difficult express how wonderful the Democratic National Convention has been. Listening to so many politicians with a brain and a vocabulary beyond the third grade has been breath taking. It is as though the noisy children who were obnoxiously dancing in front of the TV have at last gone to bed so the adults can have finally have a conversation.

You see, the adults will be stuck with cleaning up the colossal mess in America, the world, and particularly in Iraq which was created by these children. It is clear that international support will be necessary, and we need a leader who has not burned all those bridges. No more drunken cowboy style politicians.

I am tired to the point of being livid with those nonsensical, emoting children belching their pseudo-religious-patriotic-morality into the media. Their arguments against the Democratic leadership are so flimsy that they cannot argue on that basis; they must resort to accusation, deception, and slander instead of building a rational case outlying their vision for the future of America.

Hearing the simple truth stated so clearly at the Democratic Convention has been more than refreshing, it has been convicting.

2. Not bad
Shorten it up a bit (think two paragraphs, maybe three) and cut down on some of the invective. It's tempting to throw everything in there, but a string of labels is a real turn-off. Here's my edited version:

The Democratic National Convention has been wonderful. Listening to so many fine speakers has been breath-taking. These are the men and women who will clean up the colossal mess in America, the world, and particularly in Iraq which the Bush administration has created. They will restore the international ties damaged by the current administration.

Hearing the simple truth stated so clearly at the Democratic Convention has been more than refreshing, it has been convicting.

7. eh eh eh
I think the bush legacy would be that he taught the world extreme hardball politics. An imbecile bristling with aggressive stupidity.

3. My editor always said, "I like an article with bite, . . .
. . . but leave out the fangs."

I'd leave out the drunken cowboy comment, if you want it published.

And I don't believe "convicting" is a word - at least, not in the sense you're trying to use it in. "The court was busy convicting war criminals" - ok.

6. The Newspaper Called
and said they wanted to publish my opinion but they wanted me to shorten it to 100 words. Here is the revision:

******************************

The Democratic National Convention has been wonderful. It is breath taking to hear so many politicians with a vocabulary beyond the third grade.

It is clear that international support will be necessary to clean up the mess of the last four years. We need fresh leadership which has not burned those bridges.

A match holding child in cowboy pajamas calling the rest of the worlds opinion “irrelevant” is obviously the answer for some, but not me. Furthermore, their pseudo-religious-patriotic-morality arguments create only nausea and gas; not solutions.

Honest answers and real solutions are on display at the Democratic National Convention.
