For whatever reason Mr. Moore can't make it to Crawford, even after he said he would be there and offered an invitation to Bush to attend. Mr. Moore, if you don't show, you SUCK! I am through and god help us all. How could you do this to all the people in the area fighting to hear their message be heard.

1. You have to admit, he'd get more press and interviews at the convention
Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 04:51 PM by thebigidea
He'd make more of a difference combating the media where they are assembled... he's already done tons of interviews on just the first two days, the Crawford event would've been a small blip on the media radar screen.

Why take it so personally? Look at the big picture.

nor is he about to expose the entire Bush Crime Family and Private Spook Army.

So I think if he got whacked it would in fact be a Lone Freeper, in this particular case.

But who really knows?

apparently he made a snarky comment about Kerry in vietnam, throwing in Platoon and Apocalypse Now references.

I guess this somehow erases years of daily, completely brilliant skewering of the Bush Mob to some people here.

because he dared to mock Kerry over a serious issue.

Now Mike dares to cancel an appearance, and it's 'if you don't show, you SUCK!'

It makes me sad that we can turn on those who help to further our causes if they're less than 1000% of what we want them to be.

24. Thanks ... I went to check it out
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."

I believe people show how small their minds are when they expect public figures to have the perfection of complete consistency. It happens on DU over and over again.

So expand your minds, people. Allow for ambiguity. Recognize the possibility that truth is complex and appearance is not always reality.

It seems you only suck if you aren't 100% behind Kerry all the time.

If Moore shut up and followed the leader he wouldn't have any credibility with anybody and the Repubs would have a field day.

Jon Stewart NEEDS to make jokes about Kerry or he will slip into irrelevancy by becoming a one joke wonder. How much impact would he have if he only had his choir to preach to every night.

I hope this is a symptom of 4 yrs of totalitarian government and not a case of otherwise good people turning into brownshirts when they hear criticism.

And someone criticized OBAMA? what the fuck for? I have never been so impressed with someone in my life.

If Moore hadn't shown the movie at all, that would have sucked. But his presence was probably more of a drag away from the real meaning of the movie. It's not about Michael Moore worship. It's about getting some facts out to those that haven't seen them before.

he found out several RW groups were going to attend and doesn't want to take attention away from the DNC with a riot in Crawford. I think his reason is a sound one. He has a good point.

I don't think he will back down to ANYTHING after the convention. JMCPO

Maybe he just said that to get the RWers to stay home....and he'll really attend. I just heard him on Nightline last night and he said he was going to Crawford.

32. Get real. Moore's message has gotten out to the tune of almost....
....$100 million in total revenues. If $8.00 is an average ticket price, that means more than 12,000,000 people have seen his movie and spread the word on an exponential basis. By November 2, I'm betting that nearly 25,000,000 people will have seen the movie in the U. S. alone.

You need to get a grip. Moore has bigger fish to fry than going to Crawford to look for a guy that will be as AWOL for this as was for his National Guard duty.

39. Oh, for F@#K's sake!
And this southern belle doesn't say that lightly (even in keyboard code)!

If he showed up and the event became a total, violent riot, would you praise his bravery and courage? Because I have no doubt that this is the direction things were heading as political rhetoric heats up by the minute.

Heck, no - everyone would be talking for at least a week about Michael Moore's self-serving, egotistical antics that put innocent Texan lives in danger.

Moore probably made the offer to watch the film with Bush in Crawford without really thinking about the security implications. It was a mistake - I applaud him for realizing that before things got truly ugly, even knowing he'd have to eat crow over the cancellation.

49. earlier posters mentioned some right-wing groups out to disrupt ...
Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 05:35 PM by Lisa
Remember what happened in 2000 -- Gore was worried that there could be violence (accidental or provoked). If the Bushies would stoop to staging a riot back then (e.g. at that Florida office), nothing I've seen of them in the past 4 years indicates they have become kinder and gentler!

In Moore's place, I would have done the same thing. It's turned from a simple little screening into something that could get dangerous. I guess the local sheriff's department could call in the Secret Service, but do we really want that?

If anybody (Dem or Repub) was injured or killed at the event, he'd have to live with it forever. Plus it could throw a shadow over everything going on in Boston now.

p.s. another point -- Moore is being mobbed so much that his presence is getting more attention than the film itself, and the groups screening it. (There have already been posts to the effect that people would only go to Crawford if they could see Moore.) He was supposed to be showing it to a group of veterans in Boston -- some of the organizers became disgruntled because the media were more interested in Moore than in the soldiers (and all that feeds into the myth about him being arrogant and self-serving). Moore smoothed things over by insisting that the press talk to the veterans and hear their stories. Maybe his Boston experience led him to wonder whether it might be better if he just let the Crawford Peace House take center stage, without him distracting the crowd?

p.p.s. as others have said -- this is historic! I would love to go, except that I'm several hundred km and an international border away. I've had the privilege of talking to Moore for a few moments -- I'm quite sure that anyone who DOES make the trip to Crawford, then goes to any future event of his, will get eager questions from him about how things went.

Oh, and if it's not too late -- and any of the organizers are checking this thread -- have you considered a brief "Q&A" session with him by phone? As Mr. Bush points out, you can do "all kinds of things" with speaker phones and conference calls!

Moore can't even promote his own work, explain his cause/point of view, without his opponents squawking "It's all about MM." For better or worse, you cannot always separate the work from the artist, the issue from the messenger.

43. He did not slam me. The movie is STILL going to be played in
Crawford. Have you lost sight of that? The guy who arranged this in the first place did it to show people, AS OPPOSED to a celebrity event. I don't care why Moore decided not to show, but if, for example, he bowed out because of threats, then more power to him. Crawford was going to be a lightning rod for all the Bush cranks in the area.
If you were going to go there to watch the movie, then go (unless the thunderstorms in the area hold you back). And if you feel slammed, okay, but don't speak for everyone else in Texas in the area, because I don't share your opinion.

45. It's not like the whole event was canceled or anything
The fact that a war protest and a viewing of F911 will be taking place in Crawford, Texas tonight is unfreakinbelievable. I don't think some people here fully understand exactly how conservative this place is. I would be surprised if a fight didn't break out...hopefully there will be no guns involved.

This morning there were several bags of manure with the sign that said something along the lines of "This is what I think of you Michael Moore". My local news covered this story a few minutes ago. The event planners were able to clean everything up so as far as I'm concerned, all is good. Moore doesn't have to be there in order for the message to be delivered.

several times. He gave you national free coverage! I assume you guys are still going to screen the film? He invited Bush to screen it. I mean, talk about free publicity. Whether you get Moore there or not, the eyes of the world will be watching your good old fashioned Texas activism.

You planned a great action for the cause. Don't stop. Keep sending Moore reports. If it turns into a riot, get videotape! How the heck do you think Moore got his start? I am sure you are disappointed, but Moore's voice is best heard in Boston this week. You make yours heard in Crawford. Please keep us posted about this event.
