Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 07:16 PM by TrueAmerican
I believe you should either stand at attention, bow your head, sing it if you will, put your hand over your heart. But I don't believe the National Anthem should be treated as a disco hit.

But you have the right to show your respect anyway you want. I don't believe it was proper.

A political statement which totally captured the times, with no words spoken.

I don't see what the big deal is.

I find the whole overuse of the National Anthem a bit ridiculous, anyway. Before sporting events, for example. They should give it a rest.

23. Fully agree- except about the overreacting part
IMO, disrespectful is the appropriate word. For those who disagree, maybe "tacky" would suffice? Regardless, you're right- ppl can show their version of respect in any way they choose.

And as for the suggestion that the handwaving was like that found in some churches- BM specifically asked the audience to put their hands in the air- it was not a spontaneous show of fervor.

40. The lyrics were a poem that F. S. Key wrote.
The melody was a drinking song from England or Ireland.
They just slowed it down. Hum it a little bit faster, and you'll sense it.

46. Here's the original lyrics (drinking song)
http://www.mudcat.org/@displaysong.cfm?SongID=7357

TO ANACREON IN HEAVEN
To Anacreon in Heav'n, where he sat in full glee
A few sons of Harmony seny a petition,
That he their inspirer and patron would be,
When this answer arrived from the jolly old Grecian:
Voice, fiddle and flute,
No longer be mute.
I'll lend you my name, and inspire you to boot...
And, besides, I'll intruct you, like me, to entwine
The myrtle of Venus with Bacchus' vine.

50. I thought it was "World Turned Upside Down"
which according to legend Cornwallis ordered played when he surrendered to Washington.

If buttercups buzz'd after the bee
If boats were on land, churches on sea
If ponies rode men and if grass ate the cows
And cats should be chased into holes by the mouse
If the mamas sold their babies
To the Gypsies for half a crown
If summer were spring
And the other way 'round
Then all the world would be upside down!

"God Save the Queen" is the tune for "My Country Tis of Thee".

I didn't really think it was disrespectful but it did kind of look weird. Also, I'm a little old-fashioned about the National Anthem and how it is sung. I really don't think it sounds nice when people do all these different renditions. Only the real version sounds right to me.
