for Al Sharpton to get the Democratic nomination to run for president--he would be the BEST! What an orator! What a debater!

9. He used up way too much time! |
|
He was only given 6 minutes and he spoke for 20 minutes. He really doesn't have the right to just steal the convention for his speech and force everyone else to limit theirs. Now, the speakers after him won't be able to speak for as long as they were expected to. That just isn't right.

He isn't my favorite person in the world and the fact that he decided he felt like speaking for as long a he wants shows just more why I don't really like him.
My national anthem thing didn't say I didn't like the national anthem. I just said that I thought the waving the arms thing looked weird. I don't think it was disrespectful; it just looked odd. And I also said that I prefer when the national anthem is sung in the traditional way. I don't see why that is such a bad thing.

Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 08:25 PM by hippywife
it was America the Beautiful as sung by Ray Charles. And, yep, I too could have listened to him all night. As a matter of fact, I am listening to an MP# of him again as I type this. He was a breath of fresh air in this convention!! The adrenaline it needed!
Al definitely rocked!!
If you're talking about the National Anthem sung at the beginning of the evening, it was great!! And it should evoke people to emotional response.

24. He didn't go by his script |
|
The people on CNN (Jeff Greenfield, I think) said he saw how the people operating the teleprompter were trying to figure out where he was in the speech and kept changing where the teleprompter was in the speech. He definitely did not go along the script as planned or at least he extended it in many places.

It was very clear. The Democrats running the Convention aren't so stupid that when they see a 20 minute speech they think that it will take only 6 minutes. He obviously didn't follow the teleprompter.

32. Well, I do think that the winners at the Oscars are often selfish |
|
However, I don't really care about the Oscars so it doesn't bother me. I do care about the Democratic National Convention. And I think that all those chosen to speak should have the ability to speak for their time alloted. Other speakers may not be able to speak for as long because of Sharpton. That is wrong. It is just a selfish thing to do.

41. There was not a word he said that wasn't true |
|
He laid out exactly why African Americans do and should continue to vote for Democrats. And it was something that needed to be said, because for all the black people that do vote, there are TONS that don't, thinking it doesn't mean anything, it doesn't matter, no one ever cares about them. He was speaking not just to the convention, not just to the republicans, but to all those black people who believe that it doesn't make a difference. And he's going to get some of those votes, mark my words.
Yeah, he went over time -- but I'm watching CNN right now, and they don't seem to be much troubled by it. The speech was necessary. It was needed. It was f'ing BRILLIANT.
But, of course, all the media can say is "Golly, that was sure off-message, wasn't it?" "Gee, wiz, that was EXTREME."
Ugh. Truth hurts, people.

the networks are not televising the entire evening. If one speaker goes way beyond their alloted time, then they risk knocking Edwards out of prime time.

That was a brilliant closing, and it was stronger for Sharpton having gone off script. It all fit together, from Crispus Attucks to the fight for emancipation, civil rights and justice. A great endorsement for Kerry.

50. "We decided we'd ride this donkey as far as it would take us" |
|
"Mr. President, I heard you say Friday that you had questions for voters, particularly African American voters. And you asked the question did the Democratic Party take us for granted.
Well, I have raised questions. But let me answer your question.
You said that the Republican Party was the party of Lincoln and Frederick Douglas. It is true that Mr. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, after which there was a commitment to give 40 acres and a mule. That's where the argument, to this day, of reparations started. We never got the 40 acres. We went all the way to Herbert Hoover, and we never got the 40 acres.
We didn't get the mule.
So we decided we'd ride this donkey as far as it would take us."
