I got another republican over to our side!!! |
|
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 06:26 AM by adaircraft
My niece told me over the weekend that she's a republican and she's voting for Bush and NOTHING will change her mind. I asked her why and she said (and I quote) "Well, I know Bush is kind of corrupt and all, but Kerry voted against armor for our military." Her husband is in the National Guard and he shipped out recently to Iraq. His unit was told that if Bush remains in office their time over there is going to be long term, possibly even 3 years or more. If Kerry is elected, they expect to be home about 6 months after he takes office. She said that both of them feel that if he comes home early but Kerry turns his back on the soldiers where their armor and other supplies are concerned, it will be in vain.
I lost it. I told her everything I could to blast the stupid Bush ads out of her head and then I sent her a 27 page e-mail with stone hard facts about the votes and about the fact that those votes were opposed for good reasons, etc. I also educated her about PNAC and other Bush issues that I knew from our talk she had NEVER even heard of. It is sickening that most Americans don't have a clue about who's really in charge, here.
Anyway, here is the response I got today:
hey i started reading that email, and i breifly looked at the PNAC website. I will look into it further when I get the chance. This is b*llshit. Some of the stuff on there is really hard to believe (i believe it now) but i never would have thought that people could be that f*d up in the head. I will finish reading everything on there where i get the chance. I'll probably end up reading a lil here on there. Thanx for you concern and for ALL the info I greatly apprciate it. I had no clue that this administration was this corupt I knew it was a little but I had no clue (i never even thought it was possible) that it was that bad.
(snip)
She told my mother that she's decided not only to vote for Kerry but she's also spreading the word to a ton of military families because they all felt that Bush was the right choice (because of his mis-leading advertising) and she's going to set them all straight, too! She is a co-chairperson for a large military families group.
WOOO HOOOO!

The only reason I didn't post it earlier is that it is so long, but I put it in editorials. Go here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x65074

Now, I am going to attempt my next project. My brother is a devout Republican and he is the type to sink with the ship. I'm going to work on him. He may be a waste of time, though because he's an idiot when it comes to politics, but I love him and I owe it to him to try to educate him. I posted the email I sent my niece. If you want to check it out I put it here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x65074

8. Yikes! Good luck with your brother |

I'm a "low expectations" kind of person, so I'll be satisfied with just getting some of these people's votes. You knocked this totally out of the park with your niece!

11. If you are successful with these "projects" please give us on pointers |
|
on what helped. Where there particular articles that were useful. Are you conciliatory or confrontational. Do you tailor articles or approaches to an individual's style or temperament.
I find arguing with shrub supporters to be largely futile and induces heartache/hearburn in me. So I've largely given it up. But it could be just that my methods are bad.

19. Here is how I handled that situation: |
|
When she told me she supported Bush, I acted surprised and sort of talked down to her with a tone of pity in my voice. Not the least bit confrontational, but almost as if I felt sorry for her. I guess I would say I am always politely condescending when I speak to anyone still supporting Bush.
What works for some doesn't work for others, though. I have given up on my brother previously, but I am going to try again.

The problem with countering al the lies, half lies of the Bush Admin. is that it does take patience and a lot of complex info. These people are real clever in their deciets. In this age of soundbytes it is extremely difficult to fight against blatant propaganda, lies, half lies and mis-info. You have done an excellent job. My only advice would be to edit and attempt to scale back the volume of the info. the best that can be done without losing the vital points.
You have accomplished something cool.
Thank you for taking your time to gather this and posting it. ;)
