Edwards' speech
I taped a large segment of CNN International early today, hoping against hope to hear Sharpton & Jesse Jackson's speeches, which according to the Internet ripped Bush a new one and had the delegates hopping!

Unfortunately, CNNI didn't show any of those speeches. They began their coverage with some talking heads rambling about meaningless things while Edward's daughter was in the background, unheard, but clearly giving the crowd a great, rollicking, funny speech!

Paraphrasing Robert De Niro in "Midnight Express": "I have 2 words I want to say to CNN's talking heads: 'Shut the fuck up.'"

Finally, they focused on Edwards' wife's speech, and then Edwards.

Man! I think everyone in the country must be thinking - How in the world is Kerry going to be able to compete with that speech? I think it was one of the most effective speeches in US history.

Bringing up specific images of the young mother whose husband is in Iraq, struggling to make things work, was brilliant and right on the money. Edwards spoke to tens of thousands of military wives when he made that comment. The entire speech was absolutely superb.

How much would you have given to have had CHENEY follow that act? Or Bush? Their dark gray clouds of doom and gloom would have sucked the energy out of that Convention Center in a NY minute.

I'd been feeling terrible about the US for years, but this convention and its motivational speakers, from 12 year old Wexler, to Obama, to Edwards, and all the rest have suddenly made me much more optimistic!

I look forward to hearing what Kerry has to say!

1. I think that's "Midnight Run" instead of "Midnight Express"
that the Robert Deniro quote comes from. Great movie by the way.

3. Even my repig hub was sneaking a view.....
at the convention. I stay in the bedroom, screaming, dancing, singing along with all convention songs, and drinking my beer. He finds hilarious. When he comes to checkout my joy and one-woman party, I grab him and make him dance with me. 'We are family...I got my sisters and me. I ask him, 'how can you not watch this? This is democracy in the making.' Since I'm the drive in this family, he does not dare call me an 'ignorant liberal.' In his sneaky repig way, he has watched a lot of the convention. He even watched some of Prez Clinton's presentation, and later commented, 'I got to give him credit, he is the best of the best when it comes to speaking.' My hub also liked Edward's speech. I asked him, 'what did you like.' He said, 'Edwards comes across and warm and sincere.' (Not like cheney, I said to myself).

My hub also commented that the repigs will downplay the Kerry/bush confrontation to take away pressure from little bush, who is a 4th grade public speaker. The repigs and media will push the Edwards/cheney confrontation, betting that cheney is spooky (I mean experienced), and will sweep the floor with young Edwards. Repigs will play again, smart guy vs the stupid drunk guy.

5. Watched it on PBS...
Mark Shields, commentator with the NY Times, thought Edwards's delivery was a bit rushed and wondered if it was the "trial lawyer" coming out. I thought "'Cheney' you, Shields, this isn't some high school debate contest or a lesson in forensics. Let's see how you rate His Royal Flatulence's speech at the GOP convention."

I thought his comments (Shields) were rather anal retentive.
