Poll question: Which major speaker had the best message (so far)?
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 10:54 AM by apnu
This is not a "best speech" poll, a best message poll.

4. I ran out of options for Carter
His speech touched me. I kept jumping up from the couch and shouting "Go Peanut Go! You 'da man! Yeah baby"

But then I guess I'm a geek if Carter can get me riled up.

23. Carter
He has given the most sophisticated speech about this administration's dangerous, disturbing impact on the world. The speech was all the more head-turning because Carter is at heart a diplomat who, as an ex-president, would normally not criticize a sitting president in such a forthright, unvarnished manner.

5. Another vote for Carter
the man was before his time. And has suffered for it. Bill has the charisma. But Jimmy always has the big picture. The really big picture. He didn't hesitate to list the fallacies of the Bush Admin. direction in the Middle East.

And if all Christians were like Jimmy, we wouldn't have poverty or war.

8. What I liked about Edwards' speech was...
... that he quoted Obama. "...there isn't a white America, there isn't a black America..." and so on. I loved that nod!

9. agreed (minus the porno bit :)
Edwards had the only speech with real policy substance, the rest were mostly rhetoric. Obama's was fantastic, Carter's was the best attack on the current administrations policies, Clinton's was the best performance and Sharpton's was rousing.

27. If you were taking notes:
- Tax breaks for corporations that keep jobs in America
- A tax credit for health care and allowing all Americans to buy into the same plan that U.S. Senators use, which will cut health care costs up to $1,000.
- A $1,000 tax credit for child care.
- A $4,000 tax break for college tuition.
- Raising the minimum wage.
- Providing incentives for teachers to go to the neighborhoods where they're needed the most.
- Providing incentives for companies to locate where jobs are needed the most.
- Providing health care to all American veterans.
- Paying for this by rolling back the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of Americans, closing loopholes in the corporate tax code, and cutting wastfeul spending on government contractors.

but voted for Sharpton. Sharpton blew my socks off last night. My other favorite was Braun, everything that came out of ehr mouth was honest, real, and from the heart. Bless that woman!

17. My 4 yr old heard Sharpton speaking on NPR Radio as we drove along
...and to quote her:

"Oh Wow, Mommy...who was that?"

I couldn't stop laughing and smiling at what she said...although 4 years old, she clearly felt the passion and while maybe not able to understand everything in its context, she clearly knew it was powerful...

Al Sharpton....what can I say....while a background that has been quite controversial, the man knows how to speak....Gonna ride this Donkey as far as its going to take us....AMEN

But I would have included Dennis in there somewhere. He had a good message and wonderful passion. Dennis did a great job but was over shadowed, by the pro Sharpton.

24. another vote for Carter
I must also be a geek to be calling President Carter "da man," but in his quiet way he tore those scumbags apart. His message was the most serious. Obama's was the most inspiring, and I love Sharpton, but Carter's carried the weight.

26. I've been dissappointed in most of the speeches. Wednesday was the best
day when people of courage spoke. Clinton was elequent but one would not have known from his speech that we lost our rights as a result of 9/11. He didn't mention USA-PATRIOT when he mentioned Bush's response to the event. Obama was good but he didn't say what America needed to hear about the real reasons we need to unite behind Kerry. Even Kennedy pulled his punches and gave the worst speech I've ever heard him give. Usually Kennedy gives the best speeches. So far the best speeches were Kucinich and then Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton.

and vision, Al for inspiration - Calling squatter out w/ his questions was great. The convention crowd was loving that guy.

I've not been able to actually see much of the convention, so I've had to read most of the speeches. As such, I'm not swayed by the speaker or his/her delivery, but instead have been able to focus on the words and message contained therein. I'd have to say Carter's speech was incredible in its complexity, its subtlety and its criticisms of this administration's follies. And it gave us the best quote from the convention so far- "We can not lead when our leaders mislead." (or close to it!)

I'd have to say Edwards' speech was also very good, and focused on the rather neglected kitchen table issues that win us Dems elections. His was a close second.
