Laci Peterson, etc... basically, any white woman who goes missing. There are probably thousands of women missing at this very time, couldn't they focus on maybe a different woman each night (at the very least!)? We're going to have to hear about this one specific woman for the next few years, meanwhile, the media refuses to do its job when it comes to real news involving Bush and his lies. Don't get me wrong, I hope she is found alive and well, but I'm sick and TIRED of the media bias!

1. People find it entertaining.
Just like a soap opera.

No better reason.

12. Well, they're certainly taking advantage of it.
But Elizabeth Smart was popular too, and she wasn't pregnant, at least as far as the public was told.

2. Cause she's white, pretty, and the intrigue sells.
The Laci Peterson story set the precedent and now we're gonna hear about this a lot more often.

4. Er ...
They arent just missing; they are apparently DEAD, and apparently MURDERED ...

I wrong the media for their CONSTANT drumbeat of these stories, but not the fact that they report on them ... Citizens want to know who is being murdered, and if the perp has been truly caught ...

AHHGHGHHG! They've been reporting that for DAYS now.

9. Distraction propaganda.
The more lurid stories distract from the fact they aren't reporting the real news that is important in having an informed citizenry.

11. They must just draw a name out of a hat ??
We had a young man 18 years old found shot to death in his front yard down in Fountain last night. Couldn't that be just as big a story...if they wanted to push it....or if they pulled it out of a hat...It appears they have to grab some story like this so they can fill their airspace in their 24-hour "news" coverage.

15. Yeah...yesterday's newspaper had a story about a 16yr old girl
...found dead in Tom's River NJ. She's been missing for like a week.
No mention on cable news, that I know of.

14. It's cheap, easy and effective
Cheap - one talking head in the studio, an occasional legal "expert" offering their maunderings, and one talking head on the lawn outside the bereaved parents'/spouse's/childrens' home.

Easy - What could be simpler for any MediaHo worth his/her salt than rattling on at great length about things regarding which they know nothing?

Effective - There's a guaranteed audience of probably between 8-15 million people who will tune in all day every day to follow these cheap and easy stories.

The Mighty Market speaks, and American journalism responds! :puke:

17. Geez, you think they like talking about Laci?
Of course they'd like something else to report on. But until their prayers are answered and another sniper comes along, what the hell else is there to talk about?

16. Pretty white women
About the same time Laci Peterson went missing, a poor Hispanic woman from San Francisco did as well - her six year old son was missing too. Pretty much the same story, speculation about whether her live in boyfriend murdered her but NO publicity. In fact, I've heard nothing about it since it happened.

The media is more concerned with celebrities and sensationalism than it is with NEWS. People don't need to hear every juicy detail of this trial. I'd rather hear about things that affect me directly.
