1. If it's funny and (being satire) hits its target accurately |
|

satire: A literary work in which human vice or folly is attacked through irony, derision, or wit.
Our side doesn't have "human vice or folly"?

The infamous "FUCK JON STEWERT" thread yesterday was vomit-inducing. And the amazing thing was that he really said nothing offensive to Dems.

|
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 01:49 PM by thebigidea
Didn't see it again either.
I don't get the argument that if you don't laugh at that flash, you need to lighten up or have no sense of humor.
Humor is pretty much my life, and this thing just doesn't do it for me.
And its nothing about sensitivity to Kerry-bashing, I don't have a particular fondness for the man and love Stewart's terrible impersonation of him...
Some people like Monty Python, some like the Three Stooges, some like Bob Hope, some like 'em all. Still others, and I'm told there are at least 3 - like Dennis Miller.

Not particularly funny, but the section with the native guy is very telling. No Republican would write that. The rest was pretty naff.

so I'm prepared for the flames, but this just reminds me so much of the Everybody Loves Raymond episode where Ray and Debra do a skit about Ray's parents, and everyone laughs and laughs... then Ray's parents do a skit about Ray and Debra, and suddenly their sense of humor goes flying out the window. At least that's how I think it went... anyway ...

if the basis of the joke is a falsehood, let's say, that Democrats want to 'take your guns away' or some other dishonest RW meme, then I am unlikely to find it funny.

I used to think Limbaugh was funny at times, but what he has done with his 'humor' is split the country in two and turn liberals into something virtually akin to terrorists. That ain't funny.

|
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 01:50 PM by deutsey
I'm not saying that there aren't plenty of foibles worthy of satire among "the people", but satire often works best when it targets the pomposities of the wealthy and the powerful.
Ultimately, though, satire targets any "colossal humbug," as Twain put it. He said "only laughter can blow it to rags and atoms at a blast. Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand."
Everyone is a viable target of satire, in my opinion, when they are full of themselves or bullshit or both.

Because my answer is "Yes, if it's funny." I don't find mean spirited "jokes" told at the expense of any one person or group to be funny at all. Really good satire should be funny. I think the latest bit of internet satire (JibJab's My Land) is howlingly funny because it sends up EVERYONE.

I think that nickname for Edwards is hysterical! He may have style, but no one can say he doesn't have substance, either. Oh, and I've joked about Kerry/Edwards PDAs as well. Some of their stuff is so BS, you can't help but laugh at it.
