Kerry still losing to Bush with Veterans
I just heard this on Hannity so I looked it up.

http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2004/7/29/100720.shtml
The survey - taken on the eve of the Democratic convention and never mentioned in formal news reports - shows that veterans back President Bush over Kerry, 47 percent to 41 percent.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/07/28/politics/main632555.shtml
A June CBS News poll found that 52 percent of veterans backed Mr. Bush , while 37 percent supported Kerry. Last week, Kerry had closed the gap to 6 points, with Mr. Bush at 47 percent to Kerry's 41 percent.

20. Do they "know about Kerry" more than non-vets?
I doubt it. We have heard over and over that many people (somehow) don't know much about Kerry or even that he served in Vietnam and even less that he served with such distinction.

As Robert Reich said today-a lot of people start paying attention after Labor Day. Where Kerry is with vets and overall, considering the coverage, shows big trouble for W.

during VietNam, and has managed to scrub all records about his decidedly undistinguished service record.

3. that is a HUGE change
a 9% swing is a lot of voters and those votes are spread out across a ton of swing states. Those are AWFUL numbers for Bush.

5. We don't necessarily have to win a majority of veterans.
This is one of the core Republican constituencies, if a significant number defect and vote Democratic, it is a disaster for Bush, just as it would be a disaster for Kerry if a significant number of blacks defected, even if it's not close to 50%.

15. Well not if Fox has its way
After the 12 generals came on stage at the convention (to which Fox had gone to a commercial break), Brit Hume pointed out that "Over 100" retired and active duty servicemen will be onhand at the RNC to support President Bush.

12. This means that Bush is losing support and Kerry is picking up some of
what Bush loses - just not all of it - this is real good news. By the time of the election it may be about even - which would be a huge shift. Be interesting to see active duty numbers and numbers for families of active duty, particularly national guard and reserve who have been called up to serve in Iraq.

14. Funny--I just came in from sticking a Combat Vets Against Bush
sticker on my truck to find this thread. Actually, I put one on each of my two trucks.

I came home from Vietnam to grad school, and soon got into the antiwar movement, so I went left a long time ago. But let's face facts--a lot of Vietnam vets were terribly hurt by both the war and the antiwar effort, and have never been able to accept the fact that they fought for a lie. It will take a helluva lot to heal some of them to the point that they can look rationally at their past.

19. 47-41 (with 12% other or undecided) are very good numbers for
Kerry and a disaster for Bush. Just comparing this to just one major Bush demographic (male voters), this is pretty darn good.

21. This May Hurt Some Feelings
I'm a Desert Storm vet, and I support John Kerry, those vets that support Bush are a bunch of suck-ups and in my opinion willing to sell out other veterans for a seat at the table.

I joined the VFW but decided to remain a member at large after hearing all the "I Love Bush/Cheney" claptrap being spouted by members
at a local VFW.

Once again as in the case of the military command, those veterans who support Bush, are loyal to Bush, not to the US and definitely not to the US Constitution. They may have worn the uniform of the US military
but they are all in their own little world, where questioning the pResident is a big nono, sort of like the military of any tyranical ruler or dictator.

They just don't care about this country, and they may have been Patriots at one time, they are now Nationalists, and we've seen how that mindset worked out about 65 years ago.

22. NO that's fair-good analysis here
I don't think the 2-t-1 conservative to liberal ratio (near the bottom) is right but still a very good analysis.

July 29, 2004

"The support of vets for John Kerry is unprecedented," says John Hurley, an Army vet of the Vietnam War who heads the veterans' part of the Kerry campaign. "There was a sense among vets back in Iowa and New Hampshire that he's for us." Cleland says the 100,000 vets signed up to work for Kerry is a number "growing every day."

They don't want vets to get the full picture.

They kept the firefighter and vet events offcamera during the primaries, too.

25. It's almost 50/50 SHOVE IT SHAWN
this just means we need to work harder at getting the AWOL story out. We have three more months and new documents to help bury Bush once and for all. We can expect that fucking liar John O'Neill to be all over the airways too. Somebody needs to start a research thread on him. Where's the DIRT. He's a Repig so we know there's dirt somewhere. I'd just love to see that prick ruined for life.
