Why all the fuss about Al Sharpton? |
|
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 03:05 PM by devrc243
Good grief, while I watched his speech I didn't see anything that warrented all the hoop-la. However, the media would seem to think otherwise 'cause that's all I've heard is "Al Sharpton this and Al Sharpton that." David Berger even said that AL could have overshadowed the good of Barack Obama's speech by showing his "aggressiveness." (paraphrasing here) There is NO WAY he overshadowed Barack Obama and come on, it's a convention which is more like a PEP RALLY for the BIG GAME (and game it will be over the next 3 months). It was really not a whole hell of alot different than watching some of the primary debates. Nobody says it like Al and at least he's not afraid to speak up. They act all "shocked" that Al would speak his mind ...geeze:eyes:
The pundits KNOW this convention rocks 'cause that's all they do is criticise. They are so annoying...that goodness for C-SPAN.

not moved. I thought is was one of the best. He did not overshadow Obama. They were both wonderful and we are so lucky to have them.

2. He mentioned "civil rights" |
|
which is code to the GOP (because they love spidey decoder rings) for "playing race card"
that's the unmentioned reason for all the hoopla.

I thought it was a vintage Al Sharpton performance. He said things that needed to be said, reached out to the base and gave them what they wanted. What really got me is afterward all the talking heads could comment was that he went over his time limit.....:wtf: What about what he said?! Arrrgghhh!

He's also guilty of libel, but more importantly than that, he's a murderer.

14. I don't really like the comparing speeches |
|
sort of thing - as if since one was so good in one way that it negates another... and I don't really care what the "pundits" say - I haven't been listening to them.
With that said, however, I thought Obama's was great, Teresa's was great, I loved hearing Kucinch give his speech - but Al's sppech was the most moving to me.
Maybe he knows the most about how to get people worked up.

15. because he was speaking without a teleprompter? |
|
According to the CNN "review", Sharpton stopped using the text on the teleprompter, which means he either memorized a new speech or (gasp!) was speaking extemporaneously. Sets a real bad example for politicians who can't string a sentence together on the fly.

20. The last part of his speech... |
|
was anticipated because the song "America the Beautiful" sung by Ray Charles was cued. Some Dems perhaps were uncomfortable with parts of his speech because they didn't want to be reminded of things that he was mentioning, such as reparations and the debacle of Iraq and Afghanistan. The Dems in charge want to platform to be leaning to the right to garner moderate voters and give the appearance that the Dem party is unified to the center. It is not. There is a wide fracture in the party. Enthusiasm of the Kerry/Edwards ticket is luke warm but the Dems are trying real hard to make it seem that it is hot. It is not!

Al Sharpton was speaking to many people last night who rarely are spoken for. Sometimes Al comes off a little hard core (as does Dennis Kucinich), but damnit…there are people out there they speak for.
You think the Repukes won’t speak to their base? The 700-ClubOFWingnuts?
Al Sharpton deserved last night and he will continue to be an inspirational voice in this country.

Cable news will drive you to smoke crack, no doubt about it.
