Prayer At The Convention?
The praying that has been going on has been classy for the most part, but I'm wondering if it has a place at all at the convention. Is this normal for us? Controversial?

I didn't mind the prayer that the Rabbi just led, but I'm Jewish, so what does everybody else have to say?

1. Invocations and benedictions are quite normal for every convention
Political, business...pretty much every convention except sci fi/gaming has a prayer at the beginning and end.

2. I mind, but what can you do
I don't like it in our pledge, on our money, or in our convention. Let the pukes do the praying.

3. Are you wondering...
If it is normal for you to wonder if prayer has a place at the convention or are you wondering if it is normal to have prayer at the convention?

Yes to both.

6. Although I am not religious, I am very spiritual person a prayer would be
nice. Because instead of praying to a Jesus that hates fags or an Allah that thinks we should kill all the infidels, we will all be united in the hope for the goodness and peace that Jesus, Mohammad, Budda all taught about.

I think watching this convention has been one of the most spiritual and beautiful moments of my life. To look at that crowd of old and young, rich and poor, famous and unknown, black and white and asian and hispanic and arab I felt very spiritual. I felt like I was witnessing love and tolerance, I felt like that is an America I am already a part of and I am very proud.

A prayer would usually bother me, but at the DNC I know that we are all asking our different gods (or no-gods) for a better world.

9. We worship an awesome God in the Blue States
Most people do believe. I'm about fed up with all this God stuff between the communion garbage and religious based wars, but the country IS a country of faith. All kinds of faiths. I don't have a problem with that, and I actually believe it is where we get our basic sense of humanity from. The fundamentalists are trying to hijack that too, makes me very angry.

10. I don't mind it
A prayer lasts a few minutes at most. I'm not Christian, but even if I was Atheist I still wouldn't mind. People are too uptight about too much these days. I don't understand why people can't stop paying attention for 2 minutes while some people talk to their god, gods, saviors, trees, stars or whatever they are asking for strength from.
I don't think it actually hurts non-believers THAT much. Now if they went around kicking people in the teeth before everything...then I might say something against it.

11. It's necessary
to counter the little tin Jesus in the white house who thinks god talks to him and that all the churches in the country exist to do his bidding.

13. I mind, but
I would mind less if they had an atheist up there to give a two minute speech, too.
