Whistle-Blowing Said to Be Factor in F.B.I. Firing
By Eric Lichtblau
New York Times

Thursday 29 July 2004

Washington - A classified Justice Department investigation has concluded that a former F.B.I. translator at the center of a growing controversy was dismissed in part because she accused the bureau of ineptitude, and it found that the F.B.I. did not aggressively investigate her claims of espionage against a co-worker.

The Justice Department's inspector general concluded that the allegations by the translator, Sibel Edmonds, "were at least a contributing factor in why the F.B.I. terminated her services," and the F.B.I. is considering disciplinary action against some employees as a result, Robert S. Mueller III, director of the bureau, said in a letter last week to lawmakers. A copy of the letter was obtained by The New York Times.

Ms. Edmonds worked as a contract linguist for the F.B.I. for about six months, translating material in Turkish, Persian and Azerbaijani. She was dismissed in 2002 after she complained repeatedly that bureau linguists had produced slipshod and incomplete translations of important terrorism intelligence before and after the Sept. 11 attacks. She also accused a fellow Turkish linguist in the bureau's Washington field office of blocking the translation of material involving acquaintances who had come under F.B.I. suspicion and said the bureau had allowed diplomatic sensitivities with other nations to impede the translation of important terrorism intelligence.

The Edmonds case has proved to be a growing concern to the F.B.I. because it touches on three potential vulnerabilities for the bureau: its ability to translate sensitive counterterrorism material, its treatment of internal "whistle-blowers," and its classification of sensitive material that critics say could be embarrassing to the bureau.

5. I am more surprised that a corrupted Bushevik Ministry of "Justice"
would allow something like that to come out.

There must still be some honest people over there.

Never fear, the Busheviks will be forcing you out as soon as they get around to you.

6. I find it all quite puzzling
it is the DOJ that is being found at fault here by the DOJ.
Strange..

7. Factionalization is a component of Totalitarian Transition
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 05:13 PM by tom_paine
As the last remnants opf Free America are subverted and destroyed, as the last honest DoJ agents and lawyers are swept out or bossed by Lawless Busheviks (who's only duty is to Party, not Country), you will occassionally see these puzling moments.

But each time the honest part of the DoJ sticks it's neck out and reveals itself, two or three more get fired or blacklisted or get a new Section Chief who is an Imperial.

We are halfway between Light and the Totalitarian Shadow.

Fear when these occasional incidents of honesty STOP happening fully.

Then it's 1938 Missippi KKK Time for all remaining Free Americans.

is that the person who may be most technically prosecutable is the person in charge of it all, Ashcroft.

He has given Hoover a real run for his money.

15. Too bad
that nobody who isn't already aware of what the Bush Administration does to dissent will learn of this story and understand it.

Bush has completely blurred the lines between party poltics and non-partisanship in public administration.

During Thursday evening's convention speeches, someone pointed to the Dep. of Homeland Security as a good thing.

I totally disagree. It has been used to put the spectre of public administration securely into the hands of a man whose prerogative is to rule non-partisan bureaucrats with an iron fist.

Does she get her job back? (If she wants it) Is there some penaltyfor the FBI?
