6. It may be stunning
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 06:58 PM by RummyTheDummy
But it's too god damn long.

I have no doubt it's wonderfully written and will be delivered very eloquently. But this is a nation of IDIOTS. Most 'Mericans who will be watching as non-partisans have the attention span of hamsters.

Maybe Kerry isn't going to speak for 55 minutes. Maybe he'll go for 35 and the 55 thing was just something to throw people off and get people like Tweety in a tizzy.

Acceptance sapeeches have traditionally been even longer. 35 minutes with 15 for applause lines is just fine - I'd expect with most people. Your disdain for your fellow citizens is disgraceful.

Picked GWB to run this country. Your damn right I have disdain for the sheeple who refuse to read newspapers and enlighten themselves. It was their ignorance in 2000 that put us in the place we are now as a country.

28. True, but...
...I'd much rather hear Clinton speak for 66 minutes than (to use a recent example) Lieberman for half that long.

Here's hoping Kerry is electrifying for his 50 minutes!

24. Actually you're just the kind of person I'm talking about
If you think most of your fellow countrymen really do care about the country the live in as opposed to who will win American Idol. If you think their attention spans are long enough to process what Kerry will be saying tonight, then you're either naive or.....

26. Yeah, sure
You're a genius, and nobody else cares. You just win Republicans votes with that thoroughly asinine attitude. A despicable display.

And people do care about American idol. So what? They also care about their kids, and their jobs, and their neighbors. And you know what, exalted genius man? They watch American Idol for ONE HOUR, and sometimes more. They want to hear what Kerry has to say.

But keep on insulting those people if it makes you feel better about your own stupidities. I'm sure your interests are in the great questions of philosophy, or the detailed study of consciousness, or particle physics. You must be a goddamn genius! You're only losing us votes. But I guess that makes you whistle in the shower, since it SEEMS to confirm your imbecile position, while nicely hiding its self-destructiveness.

27. Never said I was a genius
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 07:31 PM by RummyTheDummy
Where in my post did I say that? Clearly your reading something that's not there. I do however pay attention to what's going on around me.

But that's fine. We live in a country where people really do care and aren't really herded like sheeple by the media. I guess I've misinterpreted the last four years.

It must be nice to be so blisfully ignorant. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go to my local pub where I'm sure Kerry's speech will be on TV, and not ESPN or a re-run of Golden Girls.

29. Now I'm ignorant, like everyone else who doesn't agree with you
You're a fanatic, pure and simple, and would have done nicely as a street corner commisar, complete with your clipboard, and one way passes to the re-education centers. Sheeple.

As long as we think that people do things because they are simply fooled, wqe will lose. It just isn't true. They do things because they weigh values and criteria differently, so you give them a different weighting, and a different result. They're not stupid. They're not sheeple. YOU JUST HAVEN'T MADE A GOOD ARGUMENT. Clinton knew this, which is why he won. But rather thsan face your own failings, you put it on your audience. They're all ignorant. Right. You're full of knowledge and they're ignorant. Sure. The truth is, the argument you make SUCKS, and so you can't persuade people. Too bad for you. make a better argument, and you'll win, like Clinton did (and like Gore did).

As a hint: "You're so duped," is not a good argument. It might be the worst argument, in fact.

30. "Now I'm ignorant"
If the shoe fits, friend.

But tell me, we live in a nation where less than half of those who are eligible to vote actually do so, what does that say about their level of interest in issues that directly impact them let alone their ability to process those issues? Would you call them informed? Would you say they understand the stakes?

Incidentally, DU has a spell check feature. Look into it.

34. Your arguments are no good
Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 07:55 PM by markses
And you blame it on others.

You are unable to connect to people because your rhetoric is terrible.

And you blame it on others.

It's a sad state of affairs, really, but there it is.

Someone once told me that opponents in internet arguments are desperate as hell when they call you on spelling errors. I think that's right.

I'm fine with my spelling - when I'm typing out a post in 45 seconds! As are most people. It's what linguists like Walter Ong call secondary orality, so the graphic aspect (like spelling) begins to lose importance - except, of course, to fucking desperate losers.

If the shoe fits, pal.

25. True
But if more people had voted, say even 60 percent of those who are eligible, then perhaps GWB wouldn't have been in a position to steal the election.

But yeah, these people are intellectual giants, some say.

I was at the UPS Store tonight mailing a letter. While I was at the counter, the girl was taking a call from a guy who asked how to spell U-P-S, and he repeated it back wrong the first time (U-P-E-S)...

38. They are too busy watching people eating bugs on TV
to watch anything as mundane as a convention.

Network TV is equally at fault! More interested in earning big bucks than helping educate Americans and electing a president.

Boy, the Media better not give the Rethugs any more air time than they are giving the Democrats!

And their pundits better me mostly Democrats.

33. "long" is entirely relative and in the eyes of the beholder
If it's a great speech, and well-delivered, then 55 minutes can go by fairly fast. If not... torture.

Glad to hear it's a good speech. Fingers crossed on the delivery!

15. The other speaches were to set him up...
They were shorter, they took shots at Bush, and the touted Kerry the man, and Kerry the leader...

Now Kerry has to, yes, wow them to some degree...but he has to tell Americans what he's for, and what he is going to do if elected. Lay out his plan...

I really hope he brings it on, though. This convention deserves a great speech by Kerry.
