Barney Frank to O'Reilly "I only voted for a perfect candidate once
in my life. By the time I ran for re-election, I wasn't perfect anymore".

Explaining why he supported Kerry who doesn't support gay marriage.

3. If anyone wants to know
Frank was an early Kerry backer despite Kerry's view on this. I like Barney, can you say Senator Barney Frank?

7. I'm looking very much forward to casting that vote
And yes, Barney has said he intends to run for Kerry's seat. Good. I used to take great pleasure in voting for him as my representative when I lived in his district and I would LOVE to vote for him for my senator (currently a seat occupied by Kerry).

Barney is far and away one of the most fearlessly sharp-tongued Dems in the US Congress. He ROCKS.

13. You kidding? I'm pretty sure he'd be a lock
I don't think the Reps have anyone of equal stature to run against him. Barney's very popular here. And given how badly Weld failed when he tried to take the seat form Kerry, (at the height of the Gingrich "revolution," no less) I don't think it's a district that could easily be take by a popular ReichPublican, even if there were one available.

12. Keep your eye out for another guy - Mark Montigny - to try for that seat
too. He has been salivating at the idea of Kerry winning so he can run for his seat. No doubt in my mind that he is at the convention as we speak, trying to garner all the support he can get for that campaign. IMHO, Montigny is a snake in the democratic grass roots and must NOT be allowed to replace Kerry in that seat. He is currently a state senator and I think, he sees himself as being a full fledged contender someday. That would be a sad day for all of us.

15. Interesting. But Barney's got name recognition
...and a substantial record and supportive constituency to draw on. It's going to be a heck of an uphill fight for anyone else, and Barny is a hell of a tough fighter. He's survived the worst (and I mean WORST) the Reichpublicans could throw at him. I'd be very surprised if there's a Dem challenger who could take him down.

4. If I'm correct,

Barney also came out against gay marriage.

Specifically, he suggested that it was a strategically silly time for the gay-rights movement to push gay marriages, and create a wedge issue that the GOP would certainly capitalize on during the Presidential race. I think he had a pretty good point.

Practically speaking, for the reason identified above, no Presidential candidate can be in favor of "Gay Marriages" (at least per se. Civil Unions are another matter) and still remain viable. To think otherwise is naive.

9. Well, the times they are a-changin'
I think probably by 2008, and surely by 2012, the issue won't even be an issue anymore. Which is too bad, because I have a terrific line for it:

If you're not going to grant gays and lesbians their full rights as citizens and human beings, don't collect taxes from them.

5. Now if only EVERY pundit-show comment post
...could be like this one: i.e., ACTUALLY BOTHERING TO TELL US WHAT THE F the comment WAS that aroused the poster's admiration enough to put up a thread on it.

Thank you thank you thank you thank you.

I've clicked on ENTIRELY too many content-free threads in the last couple of weeks where the lead post was to the effect of "OMG! Did you hear what --X-- just said???" followed by absolutely NO indication as to what said definitive/outrageous/insane quotation was. "Gee, no, guy. Thanks for NOT TELLING ME."

DIdn't we used to LOCK threads like that? When did vacuousness become a valued commodity on DU?

Anyway, thanks Rowdyboy. Guess I should make a habit of only ever clicking on posts by people who have been around here long enough that I recognize their names.

6. It's true though. The only way you'll ever pull the lever for a candidate
who agrees with you on all the issues is to run for office yourself. *l*

14. YES Barney as senator will rule!
Another fringe benefit of getting Kerry into the oval office! Imagine-Kerry and Edwards in the WH and Barney in the Senate!

How cool for the Democratic party!
