Poll question: How did his speech compare to your expectation? |

I was honestly just expecting an average on, but he KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK!

And I have to say, I was disappointed with Edwards last night, and I am a North Carolina democrat. Edwards seemed a little "manchurian candidate"ish to me. He seemed a little off his game.

But Kerry exceeded not only my expectations, but my most optimistic assessment. It was truly a great American speech given by a great American.

7. Way exceeded my expectations. |
|
I've been around long enough to get my hopes up too high for much of anything.
Which works out really well when you get a great surprise like this.

34. Because I first became a supporter of John Kerry ten years ago |
|
when I was watching CSPAN. I was someone who was very disillusioned about politics. I'd been disaffected and became even more disillusioned after '92 because I really believed in Jerry Brown, although I was excited to vote for Clinton and get the Republicans out. When I heard John Kerry speak that day, I believed again that there was someone in government who was on my side, someone who 'got it', and that, who knows, maybe the system can work. And I said to myself: "That's the kind of man we need as President."
So yes, since then, I have kept a close eye on him. I made sure to always pay attention to what he had to say. I didn't discover someone who always came to the same conclusion as I, or that I agreed with him on everything, but I did discover that my first impression was right, that he is a leader with integrity, and someone who is really fighting for the people he is representing.
And I watched those, town meetings in NH and Iowa and I saw him draw upon a deep well of strength to summon up the power to connect to those people, and believed he could do it again on this larger stage.
I think he'll be a great President!

36. I believe that there have been others in the recent past that would had... |
|
fulfilled that destiny. But they weren't given the nod. Sometimes it isn't entirely the candidates fault but other factors such as their campaign manager or the times.
My first preference in 92 was Harkin.
As for being disillusioned about politics. I don't look at it that way. It isn't entirely the fault of the candidates that things are the way they are. The voters or those that don't vote that create the problems. Voters or pretend to be voters want to blame everything on the candidates when they have to take the bull by the horn and take responsibility. If they don't vote or don't consider the qualities of the candidates. If they don't continue to communicate with the elected official to let them know what they think about certain issues. Those same officials know what is happening in their districts and respond accordingly. They are not held accountable because the constitutents are only involved at election time and sometimes only once every 4 years.

It went waaaaaayyyyy beyond the home run he needed. The cadence and delivery allowed John Kerry to hit four grand slams in a row.

I'd actually listen to it again. And I can only think of a handful of speeches that would cause me to say that.
Great tactic to allow Kerry to be the one to do the single Bush bash of the convention. He looked strong, but compassionate. Smart but down to earth.
Just a total home run. Way beyond my expectations.
