How did ya' like ole' Max tonight?
I live in Alabama but spent many years in Georgia. What happened to him in 'Nam and what happened to him in the Senate race won't keep that man down. As a fellow Vet, he and the swift boat guys were an inspiration. I wish that part would have been on the major networks along with a couple of minutes of the swift boat combat footage.

the draft-dodger Saxby Chandliss, ran ads comparing him to Osama bin Laden and saying he was unpatriotic.

6. The Pukkkes accused him of being unpatriotic
and then let Diebold pick the winner: Saxby Chambliss, the first Republican elected in Georgis since reconstruction.

17. Ralph Reed (the CNN critic of John Edwards speech) was the one who
"crafted" the attack plan on Max Cleland....shameful piece of Sh*T that Ralph Reed....calling someone like Max unpatriotic....it was these attacks that made Teresa Heinz Kerry switch her party affiliation....she said she was so disgusted by it that it made her ashamed to be a part of the Republican party...

He is the embodiment of much that is wrong in the world.

AKA, the most evil and foul creature in existence in American politics. He's responsible for fouling McCain's campaign too (ya know, that McCain is a drug user, fathered a bastard child, etc).
Karl Rove is simply sh*t.

Max is not married and has a really hard time. His chief VA caseworker for him is one of my dearest friends and now lives in Virginia. His name is Simon and we worked a lot together with Max.
I started a veterans organization here in Georgia. Here is me and my Vet.

23. Either would be fine

but the head of veterans affairs is the best fit, but may not
be a high enough position for him. SecDef might be good too,
but I want to be presented with all of the candidates, not taking
anything away from Max.

Clearly, he shares a closeness to President Kerry. I'm guessing
that Kerry is close with every member of the Senate that is a
Vietnam Vet. (Bob Kerrey is also a good friend).

Really, right now, the Dems are stocked full of good people
that are not currently serving in office or who could be taped
for higher office... this is an abundance of riches...

Bill Richardson, Wes Clark, Howard Dean, Dennis Kucinich,
and many others are underemployed right now and could make
fine additions to any Democratic/Progressive government.

28. Kucinich and Richardson unemployed?
Edited on Fri Jul-30-04 10:24 AM by RatTerrier
Kucinich is a US Congressman who lives in a heavy Dem district (Cleveland, OH). He can sleep his way to re-election.

Richardson is currently Governor of New Mexico.

Clark is involved in some corporate interests and runs a national security-oriented PAC (WESPAC).

Dean is running Democracy For America, but unsure of anything else he's currently involved in.

25. Thank you for the compliment. What my hubby thinks?
Edited on Fri Jul-30-04 09:26 AM by vetwife
Oh Goodness he can't stand a chickenhawk. I don't mean a person who didn't serve. He loved Clinton but a chickenhawk like Bush who never went into battle and lied about it. Started wars when he knows nothing about them. He deferred and lied and that Bring em on, no exit strategy, warmongering. He could not stand McNamara or Johnson while he served in Vietnam. He did the same thing Kerry did. Only thing, he got rid of ribbons and medals. He holds a bronze star as well. What people don't understand, they came back with a lot of trauma and he has wanted his medals for his kids and then changed his mind. He said those things couldn't buy you a cup of coffee and he was like Kerry back and forth on his medals but absolutely convinced the war then and the war now is wrong. They are funny creatures, the veterans, they are proud to have served but feel disenfranchised for what they were lied to about.

These young vets are gonna be the same way if not worse.

I was not feeling well when that pic was made couple of years ago and I will include a very recent one so thank you again for the compliment. Max was Sect. of VA Affairs under Carter. Did a good job.

Here is a recent pic

32. Thanks VetWife!
I have a Vietnam Vet in the family too....your description describes his conflicted views and feelings still...He's a registered Republican in Florida, but I think he's going to vote for Kerry....he can't stand Bu$h and thinks he is a phony frat boy that dodged 'Nam....

That's great about what Max did under Carter...good for him...and he served a great man....I love Jimmy Carter....

24. They didn't fall for them--the election was stolen by Diebold
Suspiciously high turnouts in a few precincts beat him, and there is no paper record whatsoever of the vote.

33. Max gave the most moving speech of the convention.
The part where he was in the street with the cigarette butts and no one was helping a veteran was a sound indictment of Republican policies towards our servicemen.

36. Max was great
However, I do not think he lost because of the "Osama, Saddam" commercials. I watched the debates between him and Saxby Chambliss and to be honest he performed miserably. Chambliss is an excellent debater and Max was unable to defend his positions in an eloquent or persuadable way. Voting against the Homeland Security Department because of the lack of union membership did not go over well in Georgia. Or Missouri for that matter. Max was/is simply not conservative enough for the state he represented. I think blaming it on the voting machines is not recognizing the reality of what Georgia has become.

37. Fine, other than he was leading in the polls by 5-9%
for just about the entire campaign. I do wonder what role the e-voting played in that election, but am more convinced the Barnes and Cleland losses resulted from low Dem turnout and high GOP turnout working in tandem. They were fired up and energized, we were not. That said, I doubt they will this fall given the state of things. However, I'm still doubtful Majette/Oxford will beat Isakson for the Zell seat.
