West coast Lettterman watcher just turned him off
I didn't find his jokes about the convention funny at all. He poked fun at Kucinich and Teresa several times. I turned him off.

I am disappointed in you Dave.

3. Need some help remembering :)
Edited on Fri Jul-30-04 02:08 AM by SuffragetteSal
He spliced together him saying he lived under a bridge and there was another one give me a minute...my mind went blank but I was thought Dave's jokes tonight were not at all consistent with his usual digs to the republicans. He went below the belt in my eyes.

I would rather be here in DU than sitting in front of the tube anyway.

11. I'm completely with you on that......
I'm very tired of the same ole' same ole' about Dennis. Not only is it very OLD, but it's cruel, rather than funny. Dennis has a good sense of humor, and has played along good naturedly with a lot of stuff, but this making fun of him because he's a small-statured man is just lame. It's not that Dennis is hurt by it, because he isn't -- he's a very solid person who knows who he is, and doesn't get drawn in to any of these ego-attacks.

What bothers me is that people just laugh by rote, without thinking about it at all, and over time it desensitizes them, and they just mentally dismiss Dennis. When you look at the sad state of our nation, we need all the really good representation we can get, and to lead people to dismiss someone as fine as Dennis is definitely teaching them to ignore their own best interests.

I think it's beneath Dave, and I wish he'd grow up.

Kanary

14. so true kanary
sometimes Dave's childishness gets on my nerves. I guess some people never have to grow up. Sure I'll watch him over Leno, if I have to, but seriously they both aren't that funny and for gawd's sake Paul's circus music really grinds on me. Well, like I said, I am sure I should be here in DU rather than watching a couple rich comedians do a lousy job.

Good night all.

4. he edited some speeches of his down to this:
I.

Live.

Under.

a.

Bridge.

I was for DK, but I lauged pretty hard

I started a thread on this, based on Dave's comparison to Kerry's Band of Brothers showing up for him, vs. Bush's band of drinking buddies showing up for him at the RNC convention

2. That's okay
He has to throw something in there so he can say "all's fair" during the Pub convention. }(

5. I did the same thing last night. The jokes weren't even good
and seemed almost obligatory, taking the easy shots. Reminded me of just another 'blond' joke. Dull and predictable. Maybe that's a good thing.

6. agreed, for the most part, BUT
I tape it almost every night......first half, anyway.....just to get the Bush clips

he runs something almost every night, and most of them are worth the rest of the wasted tape

he's getting vicious toward the chimp in other parts of the intro, as well, and I think he's going to ramp it up even more now, as he can ease off the dems a bit, as the pugs enter the spotlight

hope I'm right

7. could it possibly be
that Letterman might be skewering the lack of media coverage of the lesser speeches? You can pretty much make anyone say whatever you want through judicious editing. I mean, if Fox News just showed Edwards saying "We will destroy you!" what the heck would anyone make of that without context?

Didn't see the show, so not sure if this is the case, was just wondering.

10. of course, but Letterman was doing this for laughs
and I laughed, despite supporting DK initially

he's WAY more prone to nail Bush

called him a something something liar the other night; just came right out and said it

total disrespect was obvious; no joking that time

8. He's still better
than Leno, who still keeps calling Edwards Kerry's second choice.

I get the impression that Letterman really dislikes Bush...and I have to admit those splices are silly, but funny nevertheless. He does them all the time with everyone.

9. He's Playing It Down The Middle...He's Still A Comedy Show
The same goes with The Daily Show. These shows still are comedy first, attitude/politics afterwards. This week is all Democrats and that's where the laughs are. Now it'd be great if he and other comedians didn't make fun of our people, but some of this stuff is funny and why not have a laugh.

Also, I'd hold judgement until the RNC next month. Remember, Dave will be right down the street and is sure to give them as much grief, if not more, during that time.

Now if you're offended by Dave picking on Teresa's "shove it" line, then you miss the point of him playing with it. Unlike Tweety who couldn't say it enough, Dave took the word and made a big joke out of people who get all bent out of shape over it.

12. oh please
he's a comedian, not a partisan advocate.

He has absolutely TROUNCED Bush for years now. The Democrats are able to take a few jokes.

Edited on Fri Jul-30-04 02:44 AM by Dover
jokes about a subject if your heart's not in it, or you don't really believe it. Or maybe it's his writers who are so uninspired.

That may be why he/they just took the easy shots...like his potshot at Kucinich or about so and so's hair style, etc.....all the stuff we've already heard rehashed over and over. I doubt they were high-fiving each other for their cleverness.

15. You should have stuck around for...
"Now that the convention is over all that's left is the Republican convention, and then the crooked vote in Florida."

and

"John Kerry showed up with all his Viet Nam crew-mates. Not to be outdone, here in New York City at the Republican convention George W. Bush is going to show up with all his college drinking buddies."

16. Ah, I missed that part.
I was waiting to catch Michael Moore on Leno. The ONLY reason I'd watch Leno.

Dave hates Bush. Period. He has to throw a little balance in there and make fun of the Democrats sometimes. I bet this is nothing compared to what he'll come up with during the RNC.

Never forget. The White House, through CNN of course, called Dave a liar. Dave won't EVER forgive them for that one. Goody! That just means more things for us to laugh about at Bush's expense! :)
