It all seemed forced. And the left base was too much "Gore and Bush are too similar, they are both owned by corporate America, we want Nader"... and the right and center base (of the Democratic party) were NOT excited about Gore (I liked Gore a lot, but then I reported up the chain of command to him and noticed that he did a lot for us). Plus Bush was all about tax cuts (now that we have this surplus, why aren't you getting your money back!) and compassionate conservatism (whatever the hell that meant). People back then thought there was no way Bush could fuck it up too much, and nobody got excited about Gore (it also didn't help that the right kept lie after lie about Gore in the media echo chamber, like the whole "Gore said he invented the internet" piece of crap, which, of course, Gore never said, plus the Gore thinks that "Love Story" was written about him specifically, which, of course, Gore never said, and so on and so on. So Gore was always defending himself, the nation was convinced that while Clinton was charming, he was always lying about something, and so, by association, Gore was probably a liar too.
This seems much different. First we now know what an evil fuck Bush is, not to mention that his lack of sophistication, and even lack of intelligence which seemed (to many, not me) sort of charming in 2000 (everybody can go have a beer with this guy)... seems very embarrassing now. So we are all united in wanting to get this EVIL STUPID embarrassment out of office... but after tonight, I think we've all changed (I know I have). I still want Bush out more than anything, but now I want Kerry to be our President... and that's different. I had already contributed as much as I could afford to Kerry right after it became clear that he would be the nominee. Now I'm wishing I had either a job or saved more money so I could max out in my contribution to our next President. And the new contribution would not be about Bush, it would be about Kerry.
