8. I believe the word you're looking for is Nook-yu-lur...
And who says an Ivy League education was wasted on this man?

3. I thought it was a brilliant speech
It encapsulated the liberal view point very well. The voters have a true choice this fall. I hope they aren't insane.

5. at the same time, he held the doors wide open
for the multitudes angry, upset and scared of President Demento and VP Chainsaw.
I suspect that many will be joining in now.

But, to misquote Harry Potter's Dark Arts teach, Eternal Vigilance is now required. the Repuke Spam Squad (Rove's own little SS) is about to launch their scummy games and lies.

4. Yeah, but he is still boring as all hell.
And why did Kerry act nervous and rush his words out, he seemed to be on speed. He needed to have paused and smiled more. John Edward's speech blew Kerry's away...as far as delivery goes.

Sorry, but that's my opinion.

11. Info.........

Kerry had to rush his speech because the 3 networks, NBC, CBS, and ABC, said they would only give him an hour. Then they planned to cut away, Brokaw said NBC would have stayed with it had he gone past the hour this morning. But last night Kerry was told he had one hour.

He had a digital clock showing the time he had used and he was rushing it. The problem is the damn network news stations telling Kerry he only had one hour.

That is the outrage.

14. That's no excuse.
He did not pause for applause enough. He should have just improvised and cut some of the repetitive crap out.

12. I didn't think he was rushed.
I keep reading that from the pundits this morning and I never noticed him rushing last night. But, then again, I'm from Mass. where everyone talks fast. Haha.

I think that when people pause for too long during applause, it's annoying and it would cause people to get bored and change the channel and lose viewers.

I think the timing was good.

He's still no Clinton, as far as delivery goes, but I think this is the best speech Kerry has ever done.

13. I Think he Was Rushed.......

Watch the speech again, he starts talking before the applause dies down. He was clearly rushing it. That's not just my opinion, it's the opinion of almost everyone.

17. my opinion was exactly opposite
His speech was EXCEEDINGLY better than Edwards. Not even close. My wife concurred. For what it's worth, we listened to both speeches on radio. No doubt they came across differently on TV.

20. Wow, that's weird.
Edited on Fri Jul-30-04 08:09 AM by Ripley
But watching them visually does make a difference. Edwards paused to smile and nod when appropriate and people respond to that. Kerry just rip-roared throught it like he was watching a clock.

I think the content was excellent..he wrote a damn good speech! But the delivery was just unpleasant for me to watch...

E.J. was one of the NPR commentators and when he remarked that the one criticism he would make of Kerry's speech was that it was paced too fast, my wife and I looked at each other and wondered what the hell he was talking about; he sounded great on radio. My wife has a theater background, so she has been critiquing all the speeches using the criteria she learned there.

21. I didn't find it boring at all.
His speech and the issues he talked about moved me immensely. I especially loved it when he asked "Where is our conscience?" That was powerful to me.

23. See, I listened to it all and I cannot even remember that...
Nothing stood out. People need mantras. Voters want to remember a slogan. Edward's used the "Hope is on the Way." Kerry just gave us a laundry list. A great one, but not very inspiring for the masses addicted to sound bites.

24. What about the "America can do better. Help is on the way"?
I can't even begin to tell you how thrilled I was with so many parts of his speech. I could go on and on about all the things that spoke directly to me and the issues that concern me.

Okay, to be quite honest with you, I was not overly thrilled with our choice until last night. And, yes, it was b/c I supported someone else and didn't really listen to John Kerry. Now that I have actually listened, I am thrilled beyond words.

Around my local Democratic club meetings, I have heard others say that they weren't particualrly enthused about Kerry. I am hoping fervently that that speech last night changed their opinion as much as it did mine.

6. I thought he did a great job
No, the speech wasn't flashy, his delivery wasn't that of a great orator, but he got the job done and was dignified and well, presidential.

I did love his taking their line about restoring dignity to the white house too!

9. He made one error in the passion of the moment

he said "terrorist" instead of "anti-terrorist" and caught it
right away and went back and started from the misstep.

I wouldn't even comment on it other than you asked.

And no, I am not embarrassed by our new President!

10. I heard another ...
He said something about (I paraphrase) "funding terrorist efforts", and he quickly corrected himself "funding anti-terrorism efforts".

I could almost hear the nut job pundits reporting Kerrys Freudian slip up that he is going to "Fund Terrorism".

Considering the amount of content, and the pace of the speech, it was as perfect a performance that you could ever hope for.

I am almost looking forward to seeing the Chimp read his prepared garbage.

This election is a slam dunk. If Kerry is not elected, America deserves 4 more years of AWOL.

Cheers
Drifter

15. That Was Actually A Big Part of The Appeal
The wisdom, the strength. The fact that he spoke from the heart without all of those slogan type sentences that Bush strings together.

16. I'm going to get flamed here, but . . .
I've always thought that Bush was pretty good at delivering those Peggy Noonan-esque speeches his Dad always had trouble with. From a purely rhetorical point of view, I liked his 2000 convention speech better than Gore's, and would say that it was better thank Kerry's last night. The "morning side of the mountain" portion in 2000 was genuninely moving and created a metaphor that he could run on.

As I said last night, Kerry's was fine, but he still has that habit of all senators of delivery cliches as if they were Cicero. Aside from the "reporting for duty" at the beginning, I really can't recall any singularly powerful moments. And I have a feeling that I'm going to be waiting a long long time for any sign of a sense of humor from him.

Now, having said that, you put Bush on the spot to answer a question and he becomes a 7th-Grader who watched "The O.C." last night instead of reading about Lewis and Clark. The debates should be Kerry's opportunity to shine if he doesn't give them away like Gore did with his antics.

He actually used words that are longer than 6 letters long and he pronounced them correctly! How refreshing . . .

"Idear"

:)

I know, it's a New England thing... my aunt pronounces "Washington", "Wershington", so it could be worse.

27. I thought it was fine...paced just the way I like it....he had a lot to
say and a time frame to say it in...he was inspiring and..articulate...and did a great job. It doesn't matter to me if he didn't allow for applause...it was pandemonium at the end.
