When they say Kerry's speech was not his own and that he quoted former Republicans: Kerry acknowledged everyone of his quotes and made it a point to name from whom he was quoting: Lincoln, Nixon, George Bush. He was not trying to hide or steal anything from them, he was reminding folks of what they said.
