What does this say about the economy?
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040730/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/homeland_ridge

<snip>
Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge is considering stepping down after the November election, telling colleagues he is worn out from the massive reorganization of government and needs to earn money in the private sector to put his teenage children through college, officials said.

...

Ridge, 58, has explained to colleagues that he needs to earn money to comfortably put his two children, Tommy Jr. and Lesley, through college, officials said. Both are now teenagers. Ridge earns $175,700 a year as a Cabinet secretary.
</snip>

What does that say about America?! If you don't make more than $200,000 a year then you will have to struggle to put two kids through college?! I feel bad for those poor saps who make only 100K!

1. It says a lot about Ridge!!
I just e-mailed this article to my sister-in-law who has one in college now and in 2007 will have two daughters in college.

This article is very telling about the Republicans. They are so out of touch with the average American. Ridge should never have said this. He should know better than to isolate so many voters with this comment.

2. He should have been setting aside money for the last...
...eighteen or so years. That is the prudent thing to do.

3. His Kids Aren't Likely To Be Going To The Same College As Yours
What, you think his kids are headed for some state college?

4. For a Republican.............
$175,700 is below the poverty level. Who can blame the poor guy? How do you think he explains this to his friends and family? He'll just have to pull himself up by his bootstraps and work for Halliburton or some other Republican owned Corporation.

5. I think it's a copout excuse...
and a badly thought out one at that.

I think he sees the writing on the walls, and he's putting some distance between himself and the bushies. At least he didn't use that old 'I want to spend more time with my family' spiel like everybody else has.
