"Wrong Direction" comment from businessman in elevator
Edited on Fri Jul-30-04 10:46 AM by swag
Got on the elevator from the 12th floor to go home yesterday, and see a guy I recognize - very prominent Portland businessman, nice guy, and recent member of the Federal Reserve Portland Branch Board of Directors. I said "hi" to this guy, whom I have met on a couple of occasions, as I was getting on the elevator and putting on my "Kerry/Edwards" button (don't wear it in my office - and I would resent it if the Republicans here started wearing their Bush crap - it has caused far too much friction in an already stressful environment in the past).

So this guy looks at me putting on my "Kerry/Edwards" button and says, "Time to put the buttons on, huh?" I said, "Yeah, they don't like these guys too much on the 12th floor, but I'm free now."

And this prominent business guy breathes in and then says quite forcefully, "Well, I hope they take this country by storm, because it's clear we need a big change. We are definitely going in the wrong direction."

I was fucking flabbergasted. And elated. Never expected such a thing from this man. It turns out he doesn't give a damn about his fucking tax cut, he cares about having a good country.

We bid one another good night as we headed out the doors of the building.

1. Says it all
It turns out he doesn't give a damn about his fucking tax cut, he cares about having a good country

That's a patriot, and there are a lot of them at all income brackets.

7. Wow, tell me they named the Thomas Mann building after
the German writer.

I work downtown around 6th and Salmon. I'd be more specific, but have reason to be a bit paranoid.

12. Okay, I know which one you're talking about
Look out a window to the north -- I'm waving from the ninth floor.

:hi:

Okay, kidding. I think the Thomas Mann building was actually named for another Thomas Mann. Early 20th Century Portland businessman. Of course, now that our firm is buying it, they'll probably rename it the gratuitous building in honor of their favorite employee.

Kidding again. But your story is still good!

5. Business are hurting
*some* investors may be doing a little better, but folks that take pride in having a successful company and making an honest buck are taking it without vaseline.

8. You know what

I don't think a lot of the super rich really care either...its all political ideology and superflous non-sense.

This is why a poor rural man votes for the same economic agenda as a corporate oligarch.

"Rhonda's husband Steve is interested in working on the Kerry/Edwards campaign. She's wondering if you know how he can get involved."

16. A lot of rich people are less selfish than we think
The problem is all the lower middle-class people worshiping and sticking up for the rich. The neocon apologist I work for honestly said:

"Rich people need the tax cut because they have a lot of expenses to keep up with."

17. yeah, I start to wonder if it really isn't a
problem with the NEOCON wing of the Repube party. They are the most rabid and unrealistic.
