Kerry needs to make stem cell research a wedge issue
He's right. He's got the Reagans on his side. Baby boomers are seeing their parents suffer from diseases that this research could curb, and they're afraid that they're going to suffer the same fate. Only the most wacko of the right think this is the same morally as abortion, and they won't vote for him anyway.

and hardly anything screams "safer at home" louder

1. I agree.
He needs to challenge bush on this. The only people against it are the far-right lunatics.

7. Yes they are.
And he made the point quite nicely. It's so good to see him give it right back to the pukes. He's a fighter and he'll fight for all of us. I hope he continues to point out that bush is the one who is out of the mainstream.

3. Has anyone heard the story of the Bush speech on stem cell research
where he repeatedly referred to a "fetus" as "feces"? I am looking for a link. Anyone have anything on this?

5. exactly right
on an earlier thread about what people thought Kerry needed to talk about in his speech, I said there were two things that were musts: a lot about strong defense and at least a mention of stem-cell research, both of which he did so I think it was a success ... the stem-cell line got one of the biggest ovations of the night ... Bush is on the wrong side of this issue and it's getting a little late in the game for him to switch over without being crushed with "flip-flop" memes

8. Also, Kerry can use

Ron Reagan's main talking point when the morality argument is used.

Simply ask why they aren't up in arms over in vitro fertilization?
Hundreds of viable embryos are destroyed for each implanted.

The fundies can't go against IVF because so many of their base either
have used it or know someone that has... and it's the only way for
many middle age two career couples to create a family. And they are
pro family.

11. Not just stem cells, but all medical research
Bush has cut and has vowed to cap funding increases for the NIH (National Institutes of Health - the main source of federal funding for medical science research). This will mean many/most new submissions for funding will have to be rejected as their budget will be tied up in paying existing grants.
