DNC 2004 Convention Coverage--worst ever!
I know that these events are so stage managed anymore that if someone coughs wrong they are preempted, but I think the pundits and commentators are worse than ever. Chris Matthews sounds like the guy from the Oxyi commercials screaming all the time and interrupting everyone. In the "old days" the commentators would explain and make attempts to educate the audience but not anymore. Huntley-Brinkley and Walter Cronkite used to give history and civics lessons during the conventions. Also, I think that Finemann's comments about John Kerry taking an 8 mm camera with him to Vientnam was inappropriate. What was all that about?

Last night, Wesley Clark gave what I think was the best speech he ever gave. It was wondrous!! But how many Americans got to see it because the big 3 networks have marginalized these conventions to an hour a night. I think that PBS and C-Span did a great job. What does anyone else think?

1. I feel the same
On Monday, I watched the coverage on CNN. I got so fed up with the talking heads that I switched to C-Span for the rest of the conference and watched it all from about 6 in the evening on.

I wonder if they are going to do the same for the repug convention.

2. I think the networks deliberately cut out all vet/military endorsements
because if they had allowed those speeches to be heard, Kerry would be up by 20 points this weekend - INCLUDING the white male vote.

3. I will be watching closely to see if the RNC coverage is any different.
Because this was terrible.

4. Yeah? Then What???
Come on DU and complain about it?

We all know how it's going to go... prime time coverage every nite on the big three (after all, it's rerun season!), and on cable, Tweety will say every speech by every speaker was the best speech he ever heard! It's gonna be such a whorefest that woodruff will be bangin' wolfie, colmes will be fellating hannity, and coulter will actually have a orgasm on nat'l TV!

Why you won't even be able to watch regular TV because this is what you'll find while surfing:

Living with microwaves hosted by crashcart on DISC Health
The homes of * on HGTV
Bicycle repair w/ * on DIY
The life of * on HIST
Welcome to Crawford on TRAVEL
Those Pesky DemocRATS on Animal Planet

The convention will be so perfectly orchestrated that each commercial break will have a * commercial on, and arrangements will be made to close all stores, restaurants and bars on those four nights so folks will have no choice but to stay home and watch this puke fest.

.. and when everything is said and done and we're complaining about all that transpired and how unfair and unbalanced the coverage was, we'll hear "stop whining", "get over it", "support your president", and "move on... nothing to see here". O'reilly, in his talking points memo will say "SHUT UP and Stuff it."

It's all over. After almost 4 years of pure hell we had our 55 minutes of happiness, optimism and excitement. Now it's time to sit back, watch Kerry/Edwards fade out of the picture, and let the country get *hi-jacked* again.

Pretty damned depressing.

6. There was coverage??
OK, I did see a few minutes of the CNN coverage before going back to C-SPAN, but for the most part we West Coasters didn't get much. I've heard rumors that the local PBS stations covered some of the convention live, but since I don't generally watch TV while the sun's shining (just another eccentricity of mine) it was all over by the time I got in.
