1. I know what you're saying, but
His initials are indeed JFK. Of course JFK is associated with Kennedy, but to my knowledge, he doesn't own the rights to them. Kerry is JFK until he changes his name.

8. Kerry is not JFK!
Edited on Fri Jul-30-04 03:33 PM by RC
John Kerry himself does not use the initials J.F.K.
J.F.K. stands for John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

For those of us that lived through that time period, please do not muddy history. For you JFK may be just words in a book, but for some of us he was real.
We were alive then, when John Fitzgerald Kennedy was alive. I still remember where I was when I heard about his murder. I still remember what was around me then, what things looked like.

It is Kerry, John Kerry of J.K.

J.F.K will be forever John Fitzgerald Kennedy. And yes, it makes a difference.

Face it, if your initials are JFK then your initials are JFK. That's the only observation I was making. I didn't "muddy history" as you put it. I don't need that shit.

JFK could stand for John Fitzgerald Kennedy
JFK could stand for John Forbes Kerry
JFK could stand for Jesus Fuckin' Kryste

Should the man change his initials for you?

How do you know how old I am?

ON EDIT: And where is your respect? Let folks use Kerry's...um...actual initials as they were given to him by his parents. Call me crazy (or whatever you're calling me) but I don't see why using the man's initials is somehow disrespectful to a once great president and man, who happens to have the same initials.

19. Here's a response to both you and RC...
I'm old enough to remember John Kennedy very well. My family lived in St. Petersburg, FL, at the time, and I remember the debates, the 1960 election, the Bay of Pigs fiasco, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the enormous amounts of troop transports that flew south to staging areas close to the Keys.

I also remember very clearly the assassination of JFK on November 22, 1963, and the fact that one fourth of my seventh grade class actually jumped out of their seats and cheered loudly when the news was announced.

I also remember actually watching the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Ruby on live television.

And most of all, I remember that terribly sad funeral procession with the booming drums, the flag-draped casket, and the reversed boots in the stirrups of the riderless horse.

Now, I'll get to the guts of my response. I really liked JFK and was completely stunned when he was publicly executed in Dealey Plaza. I respected him as President, and I still respect his momory to this day. But that was forty-one years ago.

Now we have someone else with the initials of JFK, and he's from the same neck of the woods as John Kennedy. Were you also all put out when people referred to the late John, Jr. as JFK, Jr.? Some folks are going to refer to Kerry as JFK because they still remember the days of John Kennedy being President, and I'm not going to take that right away from them, and neither are you.

In fact, I might start calling Kerry by the initials of JFK, too....because I'm smart enough to know that John Kennedy's been dead for forty-one years, and John Kerry is definitely alive and ready to be President.

24. I'm pretty much where you're at
And almost the same age. I'm about a year or so older than you. I was too young to vote for John F. Kennedy. My family did, though, and when he came to town on a campaign stop it was the most exciting thing that had ever happened here. John Kerry is the first candidate in all that time to make me feel like the kid who watched JFK drive into our arena. I think that JFK I would be well pleased with JFK II. I just hope we have this one for a much longer time.

Edited on Fri Jul-30-04 10:13 PM by never_get_over_it
if you want to call him JFK - fine - but I don't think he wants to be called JFK. Asking if people who don't want him referred to as JFK if we were put out by calling JFK JR - JFK JR is ridiculous in this situation - John Kerry is not John Kennedy's son. of course people were going to call him JFK JR - I bet alot of people still called him John John....the point is that John Kerry can stand on his own - and it seems to me he doesn't want to be referred to as JFK and I for one think we should respect that.

33. It's not a question of how he wishes to be addressed face-to-face...
...this is what a segment of his supporters are already beginning to call him. I don't get where you and the others supporting your opinion are coming from. Where exactly is ANY disrespect being shown except in the minds of those who appear willing to take offense on this issue?

This is really an issue of what is going to help capture the voting public's imagination. The initials "JFK" clearly conjure up images of the Kennedy family and their notions of Camelot. And that imagery appeals to a lot of people, particularly those of us that actually were alive during that time period, as well as the younger people who have only heard stories. If that overall sense of excitement gets transferred from the days of John Kennedy to the current days of John Kerry, do you REALLY believe John Kerry is going to be upset to discover that some of his voters refer to him as "JFK"? Please give me a break.

And no, my earlier post was not "ridiculous"...that's your opinion, such that it is.

47. First of all
I did not nor do I believe that any disrespect is being shown to John Kennedy - I said people can do what they want. My point is and perhaps I did not spell it out good enough for you - is that with only two exceptions that I saw at the convention noone used the term John Forbes Kerry or JFK and you can bet your last dollar that the campaign wanted it that way. The people who would be captured by the image of Camelot and excited by it are more than likely to vote for John Kerry anyway.,.BUT the RIGHT WING MEDIA AND TALK SHOW FOLKS can and would use this against Kerry - oh he is a JFK want to be etc etc - which they may very well do anyway - my point is I believe that the campaign has made a decision not to use JFK - that Kerry himself has never used it and that we should respect John Kerry's wishes - that is not the same as saying that it is disrespectful to John Kenedy if we do...and as I said have at it if you want to - I for one am going to call him John Kerry. Also I didn't say your earlier post was ridiculous - I said your making reference to the fact that JFK jr was called JFK jr offensive was ridiculous - and if ridiculous is too strong a term - I'll change it to silly - the comparison doesn't work.

So he's not really pronouncing himself as anything. I still haven't figured out what the problem is. The man's initials are JFK. That's what they are. JFK. His initials are JFK. The J is for John. The F is for Forbes. The K is for Kerry. JFK. GET IT? JFK. I didn't name him, his momma named him. She named him John Forbes Kerry, which translates to, wait for it...wait for it...here it comes...JFK. Sorry, I know you want him to have a different name, or not use the one he has, but that's just the way it is.

4. Speaking of JFK
When the jumbotron screened a portion of Kennedy's inaugural address last night, the cameras showed Ted Sorenson standing and applauding. Ted Sorenson wrote that speech. After hearing Kerry last night, and the Kennedyesque tone of the remarks, and the timbre of his voice, I am certain that Sorenson had a hand in writing Kerry's acceptance speech.

48. and if you noticed
ONLY two out of the entire roll call referred to him as John F Kennedy the woman from Nevada who screwed it up and I think Ed Rendell from PA said John Forbes Kerry - I tell you the campaign wants to stay away from this - other wise every single speaker - every single roll call would have called him John Forbes Kerry - notice they sure don't have any problem calling Teresa - Teresa Heinz Kerry - so if the candidate wanted it to be used it would be.

Actually I missed the first few - so it might have been more than two but I doubt it.

with very few exception John F. Kerry WAS NOT used at the convention. Why do we have to give him initials - did we call Bill Clinton BC or WJC - I think they deliberately did not use the F at the convention and I bet Kerry does not want to be referred to as JFK...no matter how you slice it - John Fitzgerald Kennedy - John Forbes Kerry or Jesus Fing Kryste - When people say JFK they think of John F kennedy period - always will and John Kerry can stand for himself. I for one am glad he doesn't use it. Fodder for the media too

23. Is it possible that some people, particularly people that live in...
...Boston, will use the initials JFK when referring to Kerry?

Is it possible that some will use those initials as a nostalgic reminder of the Kennedy Presidency?

Is it just barely possible that most Americans have some inkling that John Kennedy was killed in Dallas on November 22, 1963, and that John Kerry is alive and well forty-one years later and is running for President in 2004?

Is it just barely possible that when one mentions JFK today that both they and their listeners relize that they are discussing John Kerry?

36. Don't care if Kennedy dated J Edgar Hoover in pink burnoose.
President Kennedy kept the United States out of World War III when the Pentagon, Cabinet and Congress screamed for war during the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis and Laos.

Gee. They even floated Operation NORTHWOODS to make it look (surprise!) like the US would be under terrorist attack from Cuba in 1962.

JFK said, "No!" and fired the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs who propsed the idea. Then, when JFK was dead, it was all go-go War Party. These traitors even used Kennedy's death as a pretext for invasion of Cuba.

Since November 22, 1963, things have only gotten worse. It's been all war, all the time ever since.

Perhaps John Forbes Kerry can put an end to them. I know one thing: I'm gonna do all I can to help him. JFK-2's going to need it.

38. Yes, Kennedy may have been all of that...
Edited on Fri Jul-30-04 10:53 PM by Media_Lies_Daily
...but then again, most of those stories may very well have been generated by the 1960s version of the "Arkansas Project". You have to remember that Kennedy created a lot of enemies while he was in office, to include the Pentagon, a strong faction of the CIA, the anti-Castro Cubans, the rightwing of the GOP as well as the more conservative members of the Democratic Party, the Mafia, Big Oil, Big Steel, and a host of other groups with an axe to grind. JFK stood in the way of people that are the DIRECT political ancestors of the NeoCons that are in control today.

What better way to discredit a man than to launch hundreds of stories each more lurid than the last.

And if you didn't see the sense of hope and excitement that Kennedy generated while he was alive, then all I can say is that you really missed something.
