WTF * on Dr. Phil
http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/nation/president/2004-07-29-august_x.htm

Snip:
The campaign is also planning to soften its rhetoric and ad messages. Bush broke with tradition by aiming sharp criticism at Kerry in his speeches and TV ads starting this spring. He hoped to convince voters that his rival is indecisive. Bush filmed new ads this week at his ranch. Thursday, he taped an interview with "Dr. Phil" McGraw for his daytime TV show, which has a mostly female audience, and gave an interview to Field & Stream magazine.

Unsnip

What is he thinking??? Ok, going on Dr. Phil to reach women is one thing, but I don't know about all the men out there, but my hubby hates Dr. Phil. He can't stand even seeing him on the tv. Won't this make him look foolish to most men out there?

just a psychologist.

16. He made his money as a hired gun
By his own admission, he didn't care for the practice of psychology. Instead, he prefered the role of a high priced jury consultant- and sold his services to the highest bidder.

Some of us might take offense to that. It's not like it's a correspondence degree. And Pscyhologists always "Just" have a PhD.

52. (Stretches out on the couch) Actually, I think I was just
expressing some frustration over the fact that some goddam proctologist or something will get a gig supervising an alcohol treatment clinic and be taken more seriously on a mental health issue than me because he has an MD and I'm a PhD. And I get kinda annoyed when mail comes to "Mr. Jackpine Radical, PhD" and when the LPN treats me like an idiot and calls me by my first name and says "Doctor will be with you shortly"

And then I see this McGraw idiot with a degree from Podunk U getting rich pushing mediocre maunderings...

Oh, is the hour over already?

But you know how thankless Grad School can be (I'm about to start my dissertation proposal in a Psych Epi Public Health program). Thankless, impovershing and not fun to talk about at parties. (But I'm fully funded and am not hunting for a job so I can't complain too much.)

For the record, I HATE Dr. Phil. They should conduct a follow-up study on the people he's "counseled". I bet the prevalence of suicide is way above the national average.

Please email Oprah and request that she not have on either candidate for President. I think when she had Bush on and he kissed her on the cheek, it kind of validated him to women. I don't know what Oprah's political lean is, but hopefully Bush is going on Dr. Phil because Oprah nixed going on her show. I emailed her even before Kerry was nominated requesting that she not have them on. Maybe it worked.

67. I saw him basically tell the anti-war group Code Pink to shut up
Edited on Fri Jul-30-04 08:57 PM by Kipepeo
http://www.drphil.com/show/show.jhtml?contentId=1207_war_2.xml

When they were on his show in April of 2003. He was basically telling them that being an anti-war activist was helping our "enemies. No joke. From the link:

"But, I've got to ask you, do you not have a responsibility to weigh the impact of what you're saying or doing at a particular time?"

"But once the war is on, and once we have troops over there, do you not fear that you are going to become a sound bite for the enemy press? Do you not fear that they're going to use what you're saying and doing to boast the morale of the troops that are seeking to kill our young men and women?"

"Dr. Phil questions her tactics: "Do you really believe that lying down in a crosswalk and disrupting traffic is going to stop the war in Iraq?" "

"Dr. Phil responds, "I understand your conscience crying out, but I also understand that if we're talking about Shoshana, I have this horrible image in my mind of these young women who are not combatants, but who are now in the hands of some bad people. I get the image of them being marched into a room and being told 'You're a criminal and we're going to kill you and if you think we're the only ones, just take a look at this.' And they're shown a tape of some of the anti-war protesters saying 'This is an illegal war.' Do you even consider that? " "

"I'm concerned that neither one of you are being responsive to my question as to whether or not the Iraqi government sees you as one of the best tools they have. Do you acknowledge that there could be a potential backlash, that they could use you against our troops?"

"But it IS in your control," replies Dr. Phil. "Because there are a number of ways to express your thoughts and feelings in Congress with letters, a lot of different things that do not embolden the opposition. I just wonder if you ever think about that."

Of course, you can't get a full transcript unless you register or something, but this is what you can get ^ from his site for free. I remember this because it caused me to write him a letter, I was so furious. He was spouting the 'you're with us or against us' party line.

69. I saw that show and I saw the follow-up show he did where he dealt with
complaints from the public. (There were actually some who complained that he had the anti-war people on at all and that he was too easy on them!)

I'm not saying I agree with his comments that you provided. I'm just saying that at the end of the second show, he decided to answer the question of whether he supported the war and he said that he did not think we had the evidence to support starting this war but that now that it had been done, we should support our troops, or something to that effect.

A pretty lame position, to be true, designed to take a "middle road" with his viewers.

He'd go on Ricki. I'd love to see some of the people in that audience yell at him. Be good if Laura were on there with him like they were a typical couple with problems like Ricki has.

"Oh, no, girl! He lied about Saddam havin' weapons of mass destruction! What else has he lied about, hmmmm? I'd kick his lying ass to the curb, girlfriend!" (Three snaps)

Something like that - based on my limited Ricki viewing.

59. Since another shrink has described Bush as pretty much certifiable....
in the book "Bush On the Couch", I'm thinking this is not a smart move!

I can see it now: President officially declared unfit to serve on National TV!

asshole who should not even be allowed to be doing what he's doing on television. But hey, he's got Oprah bankrolling him and everybody's gonna make a lot of money so why not? what a bunch of bullshit. this is a disgrace. Even Dr. Wayne Dyer bags on Dr. Phil.

71. You know what's REALLY funny about this gig?
The fact that Dr. Phil isn't even hot anymore. His ratings have slipped dramatically. Bleeding viewers and is almost a caricature at this point (ergo pretty appropriate to have him with bush, eh?).

Now if they had done this when Dr. Phil was REALLY HOT, say when he was still a regular on Oprah or if he had JUST started his own show, it might be a different thing.

But Dr. Phil is floundering like a newly caught trout in the boat.

Ha! And a lot of women I know have lost patience with Dr. Phil months ago. But the ones who still watch him will probably eat it up....they were already bush voters, anyway.

What a dumb dumb move! I love it!

will piss off just for going on that stupid show.

I just don't understand why Rove would do this. It is stupid.
