Events ran very late every night. I think McGovern's acceptance speech was ca 1 or 2 am CDT

There was a lot of democratic complaining about the conduct of the convention and that 'no one' stayed up to watch the acceptance speech.

1. I think it was more the fact that
nominees are now chosen before the convention. This didn't used to be the case.

2. exactly
the conventions used to be newsworthy in their own right - now they're just really paid infomercials.

3. Read Hunter S Thompson's book...
Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72....

One of the best political books, ever.

4. More that the networks care more about making money than democracy
Corporate owners of the major networks would rather show regular programming and make an extra few bucks than inform Americans about what each party stands for.

Each network's news department would love to show more, but their corporate masters won't let them.

5. Come on,
Actual work used to get done at Conventions, nominees were actually chosen, you got an inside look at the smokey backrooms of American politics.

Today they are scripted to a T, everything is preplanned, its just a giant infomerical for the candidate.

I can understand networks not wanting to spend time watching party faithful giving speeches to an empty convention hall.
