"akin to accepting a cancer transplant"
“Taking the Republican nomination in Illinois for the U.S. Senate under the current circumstances would be akin to accepting a cancer transplant,” said Fitzgerald, the Republican senator whose decision to step down after six years left his seat in contention.

Excellent article on Obama today from the KC Star, some more:

When Obama Sr. headed to Harvard in the mid-1960s — and later returned to Kenya — he left behind Ann and a toddler. Before Barack was old enough to go to school, his mother had remarried, to an Indonesian oil manager.

They moved to Jakarta in 1964. Obama was barely four. But his memories of that time are stark and clear.

“You cannot live in Jakarta and not have it leave a lasting impression on you,” Obama said.

He remembers child paupers gathered along the streets, too tired and ill to beg. He recalls security guards in front of high-class houses tossing coins into the streets, laughing when the poor would dart into traffic, scrambling for the money.

snip----------

After graduation, Obama declined to work in larger law offices and joined a small civil rights law firm in downtown Chicago, taking complaints by victims of housing and workplace discrimination. He also began teaching part time at the University of Chicago's Law School.

Friends approached him in the mid-1990s, suggesting that he add politics to his resume. He ran for state Senate and was elected in 1996. In the recent Illinois primary, he won 53 percent of the vote against better-known and better-financed Democrats.

He's pro-labor and has introduced bills that would force drug companies to reveal how much of their marketing costs are paid by consumers. He has pushed forward legislation that now requires police to videotape interrogations in cases of capital crimes.

“He has restored ‘liberal' to the vocabulary,” said Abner Mikva, a former federal judge and congressman. “He knows how to build bridges with people who don't necessarily agree with him.”
