Bill Maher just said:
in commenting about the fact that 2000 fewer people watched the Democratic Convention this year than four years ago: "What does John Kerry have to do to get your attention? Fuck Omarosa?" :silly:

4. 2000 fewer viewers this year than four years ago?. . .
Is that even a quantifiable number in a Nielsen-type rating?

17. She was also at the convention
claimed she was a die hard democrat.

I had no idea who the hell she was either until my mom and sister were mentioning her.

Hell I thought the name sounded like one of those TV cooking show hosts.

Kerry Speech Boosts Convention Ratings
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=494&ncid=762&e=8&u=/ap/20040730/ap_en_tv/tv_convention_ratings
Based on television ratings, Americans were more interested in what John Kerry had to say in his nomination acceptance speech than they were for Al Gore (news - web sites) in 2000.

An estimated 24.4 million viewers watched Kerry's speech on the six biggest networks Thursday night, compared to 21.1 million people who saw Gore four years earlier, Nielsen Media Research reported on Friday.
(/snip)

Considering the media is controlled by the corporations that want bu$h reelected and the coverage on major networks was shitty, I think people still tuned in and are paying attention to the election.

12. I sure hope so.
Maybe Maher was just referring to some statistic limited to the 3 major Network channels.

I watched it ALL on C-SPAN, the only channel that carried it in its entirety, without constant interruptions from Tweety-bird a-holdes. I don't think Maher's number included C-SPAN. His criticism was how everything was "time-slotted" in the convention coverage on the regular channels, as if Kerry had to rush through his speech "so you wouldn't miss the first few minutes of Elimidate."

But I'm glad to read your post about the good news.

15. Perfect - the 1st three days was just a whore media fest
People tuned in on Thursday to hear Kerry - and I bet they liked what they saw.

I love Kerry's timing - he ended his speech just before 11 PM so the pundits wouldn't have time to tear into him. The networks had to cut out for the sacred local news. They only had a couple of minutes to say JFK did a good job w/o enough time to overanalyse and destroy the evening.

16. Mahr shouldn't fall for RW talking points
I saw that "fewer people watched" story on Drudge earlier and noted the headline said fewer watched THE NETWORKS. Since PBS and CSPAN were way up, and with all the cable news coverage, and the Spanish language coverage, and with a record high of decided voters, that's not shocking to me. Non-network outlets have increased daily for the last four years. The network-only doesn't answer the question of whether more or less people watched the speech, and it stinks of RW spin. I don't really care what channel people watch it on.

I think Mahr's funny sometimes, but also kind of dim and under-informed. (Unlike Jon Stewart, who is sharp as they come.)

20. cable audience was up
I believe the neilsen figure was only the network audience (ABC, CBS, NBC) and their numbers were down... their coverage was down, too.
Only 3 nights and only 1 hour per night.

C-Span was the best way to watch and the
get your spin and commentary from Jon Stewart the next day.

21. C-SPAN coverage was far and away the best
The sound, camera angles, and picture quality were outstanding! I can't believe the majors could have been so poor by comparison.

Has to be a coincidence, right?

22. I turned my mother onto C-Span during the convention
She was emailing me so upset by what the talking heads were saying about Obama and Heinz. I told her I had no idea what they were saying because I was watching the whole convention on C-Span. She wrote the next day thanking me for alerting her to C-Span. She was also surprised that PBS would be so negative toward the Democrats. She's waking up too.
