What sort of candidate would appeal to BOTH parties? |
|
And would that really be a good thing?

2. Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain America? |

Of course these are all fictional characters. Couldn't think of anybody else. But then I have this thought that Tom Hanks would get a lot of votes. :)

I can't imagine any common ground between the neocon/RR fringe group and the rest of the country.
I'm curious to see how long it will take before moderate Republicans take back control of their party. THEN, your question might have some relevance.
If they don't restore sanity to the GOP, what are their options? Become Democrats, start a new party, stop voting altogether?

....how about appealing to the 50% of the country that doesn't vote. Perhaps if we were running a truly progressive people first campaign they might actually vote.

There IS no such thing. The parties are too far apart now, and WAY too many people have been conditioned to extremism.
Seriously, when was the last time you heard an intelligent, middle-of-the-road discourse on the merits of Bu$h vs. Kerry? Either you think Bu$h is the second coming of Christ who can do no wrong or you think he's evil incarnate. Likewise for Kerry.
There was a webcomic I saw awhile back that illustrated this point perfectly (which unfortunately I can't find to post). It had one character buying a vanilla ice-cream cone and another saying "Oh, so you think anyone who likes chocolate is a satanist bent on world destruction?" Just look back a little while and notice that anyone who so much as questioned invading Iraq was called a terrorist sympathizer.
Besides, there's just too much profit in keeping Americans squabbling with each other. We provide our own distraction. Franky, I think we're stupid as hell and playing right into their hands.
