For my 1000th post I'd like to confess-I used to be a Republican
Edited on Sat Jul-31-04 04:35 PM by noahmijo
Yup believe it or not as of earlier this year I was a Republican. I believed the mantra "Dems hate the military ect, Dems wanna take your tax dollars"

I was raised a very conservative father who never ceased to speak of his hate for liberals and so forth since he was an NY cop and is now a retired Customs Special Agent having served for 25 years.

To try to keep this as short as possible I guess I'll talk about my transformation.

The thing is I've never been overtly religious or anything like that in the sense that I hated gays or anything like that. In fact I've always been socially liberal (I just never admitted that to the conservative groups I hung out with) My father btw was never a religious zealout either, in fact he always HATED religion so it's a funny thing in that sense I was never "conservative"

So what made me a Republican? mainly because like my father I blindly bought into the talking points that all Democrats hate cops, all Democrats feel sorry for terrorists ect, see that flag burner? he's a Democrat.

Mind you these beliefs were strongest at my early age of 17-19 so cut me a little slack here.

By the time I turned 21 and after 9-11 I was a strong supporter of Bush for the same reasons as most people were ya know he's "going after the terrorists" I turned a blind eye to the critics citing only what the rw talkshow people were saying.

Oh yes I also forgot to mention that during this time I was a pretty staunch Capitalist leaning type especially being a business student at the time, I didn't like the idea that people were attacking corporations first, ect (I figured "they give people jobs what the hell more do they want??)

Well after spending a little time seeing how our economy really works, and even moreso seeing alot of other students whose rich parents were going to hand them the helm of their companies I begin to become a little weary of the idea of having no regulations on corporations ect.

I could go on forever about this, but put simply at around this time (I'm 19 at this time) I started to favor more of a "fair trade" line than a "free trade" In short today I've become more in favor of a sort of system that favors "Watchdog Capitalism" as opposed to unrestricted trade.

So yes I'm not quite as left leaning as probably most of you on here on this issue, however going from being totally Capitalistic to a person that supports unions, minimum wage hikes, better benefits, ect is quite a big jump I think.

A big part of this was my mother who works two jobs here in Arizona with asshole bosses who work her like a dog, and I started thinking about how in Arizona unions are outlawed (Right to Work State) and how since she has no one to speak for her these asshole bosses are pretty much free to screw the working man or woman left and right.

So now it's about January 2004 and I'm starting to see how so many people are getting screwed over, the fact that UofA's tuition was hiked by 33% and is on its way to getting more hikes this year while grants decrease.

The way Bush was and is screwing over this country really started to hit home to me. All of a sudden my belief in what the talking heads were saying about how we should just shut up and understand that the economy is going well ect, started to decrease.

At the same time I was with my current girlfriend Joanne, (who is now a regular poster here) She is and was a lifelong Democrat. She rarely showed it though because she thought I'd get mad or something since at the time my emotions were high due to 9-11 ect.

Honey if you're reading this once again I'm sorry and I still feel that no amount of groveling will bring forgiveness for the shit I would spew about Democrats.

Anyways, back to my transformation. So by now I'm slowly starting to see the truth behind what the Bush admin is up to, I'm starting to see what's happening to our cops and firefighters, and teachers.

Incidently Joanne wants to be a teacher, which is another issue. When I saw the truth behind NCLB I was disgusted. I imagined MY girl being one of those teachers and at that point I think I was ready to do something I'd never done before-see what the Democrats are really all about.

Actually what also triggered this was the Iowa primaries when Kerry took it in from what I recall was shocking because from what I remember Dean was the one everyone was betting on.

So that day I just couldn't take it curiosity got the better of me. I jumped online at school and went to Kerry's website and studied his position on the issues.

I was shocked to see that his positions were nearly identical to my own personal beliefs...the personal beliefs that I was always too much in fear to mention in front of my father because they sounded so "liberal"

(Incidently I loudly support Gay Marriage, but I am fine with a guy who won't work to outlaw it but to at least let the country decide on the issue. That's how Democracy works)

I had a severe case of cognitive dissonence because I just sat there thinking "holy shit this cannot be I am digging this guy's positions and I'm supposed to HATE the democrats!"

Now I just want to throw this in because I seem to be making a demon out of my father which is a topic for a whole other thread. Put simply he never reads the papers, he never watches the news, he's very pro-gun (even though I've heard him always say he thinks guns should be out of the hands of psychos)

As of today his old line if not somewhat bigoted positions still stand, however I have been pressing him the facts for months now that as of yesterday he has informed me that he will be voting for Kerry....."even though Hillary will have him killed by his 3rd year"

He's been a good father overall, despite the harsh conservative style upbringing, he's always been there for me, however, looking to him for political advice was not the most prudent thing to do.

But back to me :)

So after checking Kerry out on almost a daily basis, educating myself on his past I did it I said "This guy needs to be the next president"

I gotta say I admired the positions of Kucinich, Dean, and others, however Kerry is the one that always just hit me in the right places.

Edwards I felt was 2nd best, and I remember saying on Super Tuesday that a Kerry-Edwards ticket would be my personal favorite.

Of course I am thrilled to see this be true today.

Going back a little bit, before Super Tuesday I wasn't ready to fully join the Democrat party, but afterwards that was it, I am now a full registered Democrat thanks to the good folks at the UA Young Democrats.

I have had it with the right wing liars who tell me that I cannot be a Catholic and vote for someone like Kerry, FUCK THAT the Catholic in me says I cannot support a man like GWB who blatantly spits on this country and our fine men and women in all uniforms from military to restaraunt uniforms while spewing that it is the Democrats who spit on the flag.

I've come to the belief that those who would claim that we spit on the flag that we don't support our troops are the most anti-American and worse than those that burn the flag....you know where a flag burner stands there is no question. But a man who wraps himself in the flag and puts on that fake voice to appeal to all the good but misinformed pro-American types out there to me is the worst crime of all.

Claiming to support the troops while cheering as your president slashes their benefits there is nothing lower than that and I won't stand for it nor will I ever support such a group again.

So that does it dammit I am a liberal and I will not those that I used to be a part of define you or me.

I am a liberal and I own guns and lots of them so don't pull this "all liberals are sissies" Just because I think that the NRA is full of shit in claiming that people like Kerry who simply want to keep guns out of the wrong hands are "anti-gun" doesn't make me a Communist OKAY WAYNE LAPIERRE?

There is no shame in pointing out that corporations don't need millions in tax breaks and corporate welfare. There should be no shame in saying that in a country as rich as ours there should be no poverty, no parents having to work 2 jobs each just to make ends meet, there should be no one without access to quality healthcare, we should be investing in technology and finding ways to take our dependence on energy from the middle eastern crooks who are among those who would finance terror attacks on our soil. Teachers should be put ahead of the politician who wants to ban Howard Stern and sue tobacco companies. In fact if I had my way starting salaries for teachers would be on par with CEO's!

Having been on the dark side having fought on their side I can tell you I know how they think and I know where alot of them are coming from. It's primarily a pride thing they don't want to hear your talking points they don't want to hear that they were wrong.

Well let me tell you something I voted for GWB and it's the most shameful thing I think I will ever do in my life. I was wrong pure and simple. I was 18, I didn't bother to listen to anyone but my father and talk radio I never bothered to check nor was I even aware that sites like the BLS existed.

If I could take that vote back I'd take it back 539,947 times :)

There's more detail and everything but this is pretty much the gist of my transformation.

Oh and not long after this Joanne (my girl) revealed me her little secret of always having been Democrat leaning and how she is thrilled that I am no longer in my stubborn ways and that I step up to right wing bullies who try to define me who try to define US.

I'm 22 now btw.

So as you can imagine now that I changed sides I have lost a few friends, but I feel as though I've gained some honor and dignity and you know what I'm proud today to stand with all of you, the true patriots of this country who knew what I wish I had known all along, but as of now I will never be on the wrong side again. EVER

Thanks to Skinner for this site and to all of you who have been so cool to me on here and right now I'm off to attend my first protest ever....Cheney is here in Tucson and within minutes I will be off to photograph the event, and if there's anything worth posting you will see here it here on DU once I get back.

God Bless all of you and God Bless America!

(note I don't care if you're an atheist, I still wish for my God to bring peace and prosperity upon you and this country because the REAL God loves all of his children and would never punish or torture them for not going along with the demands of the 700 club)

LET'S TAKE THIS COUNTRY BACK NOW!!!

This is my 1000th post. I used to be a Republican, and a reasonably active one. It was the early 80s and I was dopey enough to think that the Repubs actually wanted fiscal responsibility. Take it from me: That pot'll mess you up, kids!

4. Thank you for your post!
Don't feel badly about having different political beliefs during your teen years. That's a time when everybody has the right to explore their beliefs, test things out, try on different approaches.

It's like Kerry said to the protesters today - "This is America. You have the right to express your opinions."

The key is that you thought about your beliefs, were willing to explore different options, and are finding your own way. Good for you!

I always tell folks I'm a Reagan Democrat. Not in the traditional sense, of course...

I cast my first, legal vote for Reagan in 1984 (I was young, misguided, didn't really get it), and became a Democrat because of Reagan, a handful of months later. :D

9. Awesome post
I think I love you. (Wanna be adopted? :-) )

And congratulations. Michael Moore is 100% right when he says that this is a LIBERAL nation. We ALWAYS win on the issues -- the American people are in favor of saving the environment, saving social security, more social benefits instead of Bush's tax cuts, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.

That's why the Republicans have to keep anything BUT "the issues" in the forefront. That's also why they lie -- about everything: their bills have Orwellian lies as titles, they run as stealth candidates or lying about who they are and what they stand for, the lie about us, all they've got is lies because the country is liberal at heart. Too many people just don't know it.

So glad you're here at DU.

Edited on Sat Jul-31-04 04:48 PM by Trajan
But hey: NONE of us are 'perfectly' anything ...

We have staunch socialists, who are anti-choice ...

We have libertarians who despise the GOP efforts to reduce civil liberties and increase the deficit carelessly ...

I have no perfect definition of myself as a 'liberal' or a 'progressive' ... I simply agree with much of what the Democratic Party stands for: which for me means this:

'The role of government is to provide for the common defense AND to promote the general welfare' ....

Strong Defense ? ... sure: NOT offense ...

Food Stamps and Welfare ? .... If it is needed and limited to only those who really need it ? .. sure thing ...

Free education ? ... college tuition ? ... how ELSE does a nation and it's citizens prosper and remain free ? ...

We dont see eye to eye on everything, Noah, ... But we agree on many things, I'm sure ....

GREAT post .... and welcome ....

13. noahmijo, were I still in Tucson, you and Joanne would be welcome for
supper any ol time! My table has seen more than a few students on a tight budget over the years ;)

Glad to hear the tale of your evolution left. We need young people with passion and energy to keep us geezers fighting the good fight. And the fact that you changed your political stripes after getting better information than the propaganda media offers is a great sign. It means there is hope for changing a lot of minds by showing the truth.

Yeah, the wingers do have a lot of pride invested in the opinions they think they have, those opinions which are ofter just conditioned responses to the same BS repeated over and over. Some will never be able to learn. Some will be able to learn and see, but never be able to admit they were hoodwinked. They will hold on to their delusions and not many will change. Takes a big man or woman to admit they erred. You have shown yourself to have the courage of your convictions and the ability to learn, grow and care. Makes us old folks think maybe there is hope after all.

I want a better world for you and your Joanne. I want there to be promise and potential in your futures. I won't give up the fight.

Are you gonna be at the Pima County Dem headquarters on election night? Let me know if you plan on being there.

Glad to have you among us. America just might be OK

20. Ah, the light.
It is always amazing to me that regular everyday, low and middle class Republicans just don't seem to understand that all the unfavorable shit the rich dish out to the rest of us is not somehow going to mean it affects them, yet I know a few Repugs who have been on welfare, food stamps, etc, but somehow their story is different and they couldn't help it. They imply that Dems are just lazy and don't want to work (remember when they said people are homeless because they want to be); I'm sure in the same breath they said all homeless people are Dems. Congrats on your 1000th post and welcome to the light.

I'm crying as I read this. It would be great if you sent that to every newspaper you can. The funny thing about so many Republicans is that when you talk to them about everyday life stuff, they're almost all Democrats at heart! But then the Presidential election comes up, their ego or something kicks in, and off they go on their Republican rants that don't match the very things they've been saying the past 4 years! You give me hope that our next generation is in good hands!

25. Congratulations on you 1000th post...it will be quite a while before
I get there, love to read other DUer's post, but not as prolific a writer. Glad you saw the light. We are not all out to destroy big corporation. I worked for one and did very well. Without major businesses there would be no wealth or employment. However, there should be regulations so they cannot abuse their employees, take away their pension benefits, not discriminate in hiring, etc.

I don't want to take everyone's wealth and redistribute it, but if individuals have made their wealth not only from dint of their own initiative and hard work, but also from the benefits they had because of the opportunities they were provided by our government, which is funded by taxpayers, and by the employees that work for them then there should be some proportionate payback in the form of higher taxes.

I would never own a gun, but I would never suggest removing all guns from gun owners, although I have a hard time understanding why anyone needs an AK47. But there should be more control over who owns guns.

I do not believe personally in abortion, but I don't want to deny anyone the right to have one if that is their personal decision.

I am very concerned about our environment. I do believe that without strong federal controls companies would not voluntarily take precautions to limit the harm they cause.

Everything is not black and white, there are shades of gray in all issues. It sounds Iike you have found that out and are more in line with the Democratic point of view. Welcome aboard.

26. Captivating post! One thing, though:
Edited on Sat Jul-31-04 06:06 PM by iconoclastic cat
noahmijo, your post was wonderfully candid and heartfelt. Now, I know most people hate it when their words are picked apart, but I feel that we must work to dispel one more piece of propaganda: the use of "Democrat Party" as opposed to "Democratic Party." In your essay, you used the former:

"Going back a little bit, before Super Tuesday I wasn't ready to fully join the Democrat party, but afterwards that was it, I am now a full registered Democrat thanks to the good folks at the UA Young Democrats."

The use of "Democrat Party" was introduced into the political lexicon by those who wanted to place a subliminal reference to the word "rat." The most famous example of this was an ad put out by the Rebublicans in September of 2000. The following is an excerpt from an article by The Detroit News:

http://www.detnews.com/2000/politics/0009/13/politics-119306.htm

In a flash, GOP ad is gone
Senators seek FCC probe of Republican 'Rat' ad

By Reuters

LEWISTON, Maine - Two Democratic U.S. senators have asked the Federal Communications Commission to conduct an immediate probe into the Republican Party's so-called "Rats" ad against Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore.

Sens. Ron Wyden of Oregon and John Breaux of Louisiana wrote in a letter Tuesday to FCC Chairman William Kennard that the agency should determine if the spot amounted to deliberate, deceptive and subliminal advertising, contrary to the public interest.

The spot, which has aired for two weeks, takes aim at Gore and flashes the word "RATS" across the screen for a split second.

****
Here is a graphic from that article:

Now, I have no idea if anything ever came of this whole controversy, but this was the closest the mainstream public ever came to seeing the genesis of a masterful spin. Ever since that time, Republicans and conservatives have been pushing this shift in syntax as being "grammatically correct", such as the recent quote in the Washington Post:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A8805-2004Jul23.html
(snip)
"Does the Democrat Party take African American voters for granted?" Bush asked, to scattered applause from the mostly black audience...
(snip)

As you might imagine, noahmijo, this is one more bit of propaganda that we would like to kill off. Not that I'm berating you, of course; your essay was fantastic. I just thought that you might be interested to know about this little trick.

Now, I need a drink. I'm meeting up with the gang at Moody's Pub on Broadway, if anyone's interested.

27. Thank you so much for your post....
I was just thinking today about what makes people "turn", so reading
all that you had to say was very informative. As a life-long Democrat its
particularly useful to listen to a story like yours, because I have no
"transformation" experience of my own. I do know that when you have
invested a lot into a belief system, its hard to let it go. It feels like a big
chunk of yourself is going with it. But I haven't been very effective in
changing people's minds about Bush etc.!

I'm very glad all of you ex-Republicans stick around here at DU. The bashing
of the GOP here gets pretty bad sometimes (I'm guilty too) and I wonder how
some of you can avoid taking it personally.

36. Again, we are so much alike! :)
I voted for Ford in my first election -- still under the influence of my Republican parents. But by 1980, I was a Carter fan (actually, I can't remember if I voted for Carter or John Anderson -- sorry!) It was Phyllis Schlafly who influenced me to change parties. I didn't know much about economics and defense back then but I sure knew I didn't belong in the same party as her!

Anyway, I'm now a "yellow dog Democrat" but we raised our children to think for themselves and let them know we would love them no matter what. I've often said that the greatest compliment they could pay us would be to become Christian Republicans, because then we would know they chose such beliefs for themselves and sure as not because of us! ;)

So far, they're all liberal atheists so did we brainwash them after all?

Always good to hear from my Longhorn neighbor down the road! :toast:

29. I have to say I really admire you
for actually making the effort to educate yourself. It's so easy for the corporate media to shove those right-wing talking points out to the public. I love talk radio so I'm almost surprised I made it through the barren years without converting! (GO AA!!) But you have to look for facts and that takes an effort many people aren't willing to make. You've done that. What you've done is grass roots. Your girlfriend talking to you, and you talking to your dad. In this way, we will make sure the truth is out there. Thanks for caring enough about our country to find out the truth! Inspiring story, thanks for posting.

30. I used to consider myself a democrat, but
Edited on Sat Jul-31-04 06:41 PM by DaveSZ
now consider myself a liberal independent.

It was mostly because I started reading more about the dark side of Clinton's policies.

I'm willing to give Kerry a chance though, and the fact he picked Edwards and has the best record on the environment in the Senate helped me make that decision.

I do wish we had a real democracy here in the US so that I could vote my conscience, but I agree with Kerry probably about 70% of the time.

31. I thought i was a Republicans as well......
Yep, i live and grew up in the south so i had to bear allot of that "moral majority" crap back in the early and middle 80's. Not to mention i was raised in a house where any question i asked about "why" did we do this or that was greeted with the old line "if you don't like this country leave!" I always thought that was a great response to those asking inquisitive questions lol!

Something was different about me though, my very first election i made sure to vote, and dragged several friends to vote. All just so i could do my part to unseat that racist pig of a Senator Jesse Helms.

Looking back i must have looked odd to my redneck friends, dragging them to vote for a black man(Harvey Gantt)to unseat a racist white man. I'm surprised i got as many to go as i did.

Truth be known, yes it was all the anti democrat propaganda i was exposed to that formed my opinions. Later i started seeing on my own that i did not think like these republicans, and self proclaimed moral elitist's

I honestly feel i was saved because i was smart enough to see through the bullsh*t, and ask all those questions.

34. I was a liberal Republican until 2000.
Then I felt out of place. Way out of place. Bush's position on the death penalty, where he got joy out of killing people, frightened me to start supporting Democrats.

35. Welcome to the Democratic Party and a once and future
Democratic nation! I'm so happy for you and you revelation. I, too, once was dazed, confused, mixed-up, puzzled and ignorant. I was a big Reagan supporter (oh the SHAME!) and I voted for Bush I in my first election. (BIGGER SHAME) I've seen the light now, and have been a staunch liberal for over fourteen years now. I've actually come back home to the way I really am. And it's a great feeling. I'm so happy for you. Say it loud, and say it proud!: I'm a liberal, and I love America!

Dem for two years. The Republican party was hijacked by Neocon Fascists. I am what you would have called your stereotypical Republican. I am a southern white middle aged male, ex-military, blue collar 20 year ex-republican.

They are losing us rapidly, I have conservative friends that are fed up with Bush and have confided in me that they are voting Kerry, because they know all the above about me.

You are not alone here at DU, there are many of us, welcome to the Big Tent!

38. What a post!
Thanks for taking the time to share everything that led to your transformation. I was thinking as you said that you still hold some right leaning beliefs such as gun ownership, that it's really not so much whether you are a democrat or a republican as it is what you stand for. Right is right no matter what party you belong to.

Many republicans won't vote for Bush this time around either because they know the difference between right and wrong.

It's the meaness and sociopathy that SOME republicans (ie Ann Coulter) readily exhibit in recent years--that is disturbing and harmful to our country in countless ways. But I know all are not like that and you are proof of that. Thanx for sharing.

40. Welcome to the light.
I'm too tired right now to say much from walking for Kerry, but although we were precinct walking to preach to the choir, we were surprised and delighted to meet many Republicans who were interested in our literature and who told us they hadn't decided whether they were voting for Kerry, but they definitely weren't voting for Bush.

One young woman actually chased me down the stairs after I had spoken to a neighbor of hers saying she wanted to read my propaganda because Bush's policies were ruining her career. She didn't elaborate what that was.

I think more and more we need to start refuting the lies told about Democrats and liberals. Like I told the young women, we are first and foremost Americans before being liberals or conservatives and we need to save our country.

41. I've voted for Republicans before
but have always been registered as a Democrat. Hell, I even voted for Nixon in 68 thinking he would end the war, and I wouldn't get drafted. He didn't end the war, and I got drafted. Today, there are few, if any, republicans worth voting for. The days of honest, moderate republicans are over even in most local and state elections. They've turned into an evil, crooked, and despicable bunch. Why Christians support these criminals never ceases to amaze me.

50. Well you wouldn't be the first.
The parties have been in a wash of change over the last 25 years or so. I'm convinced that some of what is happening to the Dem party now is a result of independents and moderate Republicans joining the fold because of the hijacking of the Republican party in the nineties.

I think back to the days of the Republican Party under Teddy Roosevelt. Conservative meant conservation of the wilderness. Teddy was a progressive "trust buster." How fair they have moved away from their earlier days.

Welcome to the Democratic Party. I was ready to leave it for the Greens, but my distaste for the idiots that have hijacked the Republican Party brought me back. The speeches at the convention made me feel like I was back home again.

Thanks to the people who mentioned the importance of education. I started teaching under Ford. The best years for education where the years of Carter. Since those days I have seen the erosion of public education.

Public Education can be the great equalizer. It can also be a way to brainwash an entire nation. I see the whole trend toward standardizing education as a move to brainwash the nation. There are some states that give their teacher's their daily lesson plans. This scares me to no end. It is very similar to the way Fox gives it's reporters everything they can and can not say. I fear if we don't make a stand now, our country will have every reporter and every teacher speaking like robots for the good of the state. Scary, Scary, Scary.

I feel like hugging you all. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:

Don't beat yourself up too much about voting for GWB. We all make mistakes at some points in our lives. The important thing is that you have thought many issues through and have come to the conclusion that the Dems have the better way of looking at issues that affect us all. That, my friend, is all that matters.

I really think alot of people are like that, brought up to believe Democrats are poor, lazy, welfare free loaders. Alot of my friends think that and I just kind of shrug it off.

Oh, and Kerry is in favor of gay marriage. He can't come out and say it on the campaign because the country is only 20% in favor, 80% oppose. He would lose the election probably on that one issue. He may goto work on it in office though.

I know how Reps see things, I used to be one. I was never a racist or a gay-hater tho. It was purely economic issues that made me identify with Repugs.
