What if the 'October Surprise' is the RNC doesn't nominate * ?
I was just reading through some of the threads here, especially this one (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x2125636) and I thought, what if the repubs don't nominate * at the convention and instead nominate someone else? Could they do that? Would that work?

1. I was thinking the same thing. That would be the best surprise of all
Not likely. The Smirk is too arrogant and conceited.

2. Not gonna happen
Not 2 months before the election. They have to ride it all the way now.

3. Tell you what, nominating McCain instead of Bush would tank us.
Bush is the Republican party's own worst enemy.

4. McCain wouldn't accept
because he wouldn't be a tool for the powers behind the throne. And I don't think those people want McCain either.

5. I don't think nominating McCain would tank us.
Kerry is going to win this against whatever they do (with the possible exception of the e-voting problem).

6. They are not going to nominate McCain.
Remember this is the party of hyped testosterone. If they didn't nominate Bush, it would portray them as weak and insecure in their party.

12. The PNAC'ers want to WIN!

7. No, Kerry wouldn't "win against anybody".
Come on, let's not pretend like he's some kind of unstoppable political juggernaut. He was the "safest" and "most electable" choice to counter Bush with.

16. I don't agree with that. McCain is not that great a candidate, imho.
What's so great about him?

8. Can't be done at this point.
McCain simply cannot pull it off at this point.

The infighting within the republican party would likely spill over to the congressional races and they would lose far, far more than would be gained from a McCain run at this stage of the game.

The religious fanatics, er, right (perhaps it should be "wrong") would also be antagonized. The tumbleweed is their man and they are the only hope of the repubs. keeping the whitehouse at this stage.

The Democratic base is too energized, however. There aren't enough religious fanatics to carry the day for bush.

Still, they are the only hope he has.

9. I would LOVE to see that!
McCain may be a stronger candidate, but a surprise nominee at the convention??? That would be way too much fun. What, the Repub party would basically have to repudiate TeamBush? McCain would pull us out of Iraq? Balance the budget? (well, he might do that.) Roll back the tax cuts? Undo the Medicare fiasco? Join the ICC?

For him to get any traction, the 'Pubs would have to repudiate much of what they have sold us for the past 3 years. I am confident Swift Boat Captain Kerry would look forward to that battle.

But then again, I was kind of secretly holding out hope that we would -surprise!- nominate Howard Dean. :-)

10. Not a chance
But it might be that Cheney has a sudden worsening of his heart condition and has to be replaced by McCain.

That could be trouble.

McCain might just do it. He smells the aroma of impeachment in the air, and would love the top job.

11. Would Cheney agree to this?
Egads, what a concept.

Ridding the ticket of Cheney and putting in McCain is worth a several point swing over to Bush.

However, Cheney knows all the dirt inherent in this administration. He could make it very tough on the tumbleweed if he is willing to talk and spill some dirt. That, in and of itself, would negate the advantages a Bush/McCain ticket.

It all depends on if he is willing to keep quiet and if the repubs. will pay him enough to keep quiet.

It seems a long shot, but Bush seems willing to do anything at this point to hold onto the White House.

13. McCain won't be involved with this administration
Not as long as Rove is around. I would never vote for McCain, but there's no doubt in my mind he wouldn't f**k this country up like W did.

14. Too LIttle, Too Late
The only thing that could save the GOP as a viable political party would be impeachment, and they don't have time or guts for that.
