David Brock challenges CNN for equal time
Great letter! I'm glad he's finally on our side.

And he should be given time, since the likes of Brent Bozelle were featured:

July 29, 2004

Kenneth Tucker
CNN Producer

Dear Kenneth,

I am writing to you today regarding L. Brent Bozell's Live From... interview with anchor Miles O'Brien on July 27.

Although I am concerned that O'Brien did not inform CNN viewers that Bozell, like the organization that he runs, is staunchly conservative, I am more interested in the issue of CNN providing comparable air time to groups with different views on the media than those of Bozell. One of the reasons that conservatives dominate the debate over the politics of the media in our country is that, all too often, organizations like Bozell's are given the stage to themselves while progressives are sidelined.

(snip)

I would request that my organization, Media Matters for America -- a progressive, Web-based, not-for-profit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the media -- be given equal air time, beginning with CNN's coverage of the Republican National Convention.

I look forward to hearing from you on this matter. I thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

David Brock
President and CEO

1. We will, We will, Brock you!
For people who don't listen to Air America Radio, that is the theme song Al Franken plays for David Brock during his weekly interviews on the show..

of equal time - We want Michael Moore and David Brock to do the rebuttal for the RNC Convention coverage!!

9. Why doesn't cnn just come out and say they are striving for
the fauxsux ratings? Why aren't there more Dem People who should be able to sway the ratings the other way..say to the Internet?

And I can just imagine what the big heads at cnn thought about David Brock's letter.

3. even better than emails....
...if you are able to send a fax, do so. If you have the time to print out a page on paper, stick it in an envelope, and put a stamp on it, your message will carry the weight of a hundred letters! A hundred letters will change coverage, says Paul Begala. A hundred paper letters -- that's all it takes.

I'll do one.

Will you?

4. Excellent suggestion
thanks for the mailing address. One hardcopy letter equals 10 phone calls and e-mails, according to many in the media.

Let's keep this thread kicked!

10. Allow me to just kick this to high heaven, grasswire!
YOU are to be HUGELY thanked for dropping that Paul Begala quote here awhile back. I can't tell you HOW MANY TIMES I've used it, myself, exhorting people to write conventional paper letters.

To make SURE your letter doesn't get banished to "anthrax hell," here's what to do: Print that letter out, as described above. Then, FOLD IT as you would if you were putting it into a conventional business-size envelope. Tape it shut at the outer fold (NOT along the sides). Address it as usual and stamp. The idea being: so ANYONE could look inside and see clearly that there's nothing fishy hidden in there.

WE ABSOLUTELY NEED TO BACK BROCK UP. We NEED balanced coverage, and if they're going wall-to-wall republi-CON (and that GOD-AWFUL brent bozell, of all people!!!) then they DAMNED WELL better go wall-to-wall DEMOCRAT during the bush CON-vention.

RED ALERT!!!

DO IT!!!

7. Oh, David Brock..I kept reading this as David Brooks and was
wondering how he "got on our side"?! As soon as I saw "mediamatters" then I understood(duh!)

David Brock is like David and Goliath but this uphill battle that he and others are undertaking will eventually persevere because we will Never Give Up!

12. I think the corporations are thinking....there is a documentary that
Edited on Sat Jul-31-04 07:30 PM by higher class
you've been hearing about may be as devestating to the right as F9-11. It's The Corporation. I was able to see it this past week and I would bet $100 that there were about six separately seated execs incognito sitting in the audience. My imagination may have run away on me, but I noticed that they seemed to be paying careful attention to the audience every time the audience clapped, they kept scanning the faces of those, they seemd to pay most attention to the people who remained sitting after the documentary ended - looking at the faces of those in the audience a little more than usual.

Please save some pennies and buy a couple of videos when it comes out and make sure it is circulated among those who never go to a theatre or can't afford to. Keep it moving.

If we're lucky, the corporations are going to be going downhill when measured by the increasing number of people who are descovering their prejudice AGAINST us - i.e., us the little people and Dems in particular.

An Australian is doing this to us in partnership with the right wing. Time-Warner (AOL?) is doing this to us in partnership with the right wing. GE is doing this to us in partnership with the right wing. I don't know about the corporations that own ABC and CBS - I don't have time to observe them and I rely on the comments of others to hear how they are doing in their smear campaign against.

Yes, the tide is turning because people are waking up to what is going on with our former news sources.

The only way they are going to win is if Ashcroft declares martial law on behalf of the Cabal and PNAC and limits our sources for news to only the corporate propaganda networks. Then, it will be worse then Pravda and Izvestia.

That interview with Bozell was terrible (I started a thread about it here and wrote a letter also) and Brock is *exactly* the kind of counterpoint we need.

21. Go David, Go!
It was a bit of a surprise (of the ... they didn't really do this ... type - not of the incredulity type) when almost ALL of the networks/cable outfits used conservative figures almost exclusively to report from the democratic convention. Likewise we do not expect the same to be true of the coverage of the republican convention - nary a liberal/progressive/democratic voice is likely to be heard - except Zell... and he will be a featured speaker (and he is only a democrat in his own mind these days...)

Good for David to make this offer - and essentially call them on this little trick of theirs. A toast to David Brock! :toast:
