Frenchmen Say Guantanamo Detention Was Like Hell

by Laure Bretton

PARIS - Two Frenchmen described as hell Friday their more than two years of detention in the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, their lawyer said after meeting them for the first time.

Mourad Benchellali and Nizar Sassi had concerns "about the interrogation techniques and medical experiments" at Guantanamo, Jacques Debray said outside the headquarters of the DST domestic intelligence service where the two men were being questioned.

A letter from Sassi said "bizarre" medicines had been given to inmates at night and that one caused some prisoners to break out in spots, Debray told reporters. He gave no other details.

"Each of (the two men) used the same expression, 'We have emerged from hell'," Debray said.

Plutonium Files: How the U.S. Secretly Fed Radioactivity to Thousands of Americans

Denver-based journalist Eileen Welsome reveals how as a reporter for the tiny Albuquerque Tribune (circulation 35,000) she uncovered one of the country's great Cold War secrets: the U.S. government had knowingly exposed thousands of human Guinea pigs with radiation poisoning including 18 Americans who had plutonium injected directly into their bloodstream.

In a Massachusetts school, seventy-three disabled children were spoon-fed oatmeal laced with radioactive isotopes.

In an upstate New York hospital, an eighteen-year-old woman believing she was being treated for a pituitary disorder, was injected with plutonium.

At a Tennessee clinic, 829 pregnant women were served "vitamin cocktails" containing radioactive iron, as part of their regular treatment.

6. "We have emerged from hell."
"Each of (the two men) used the same expression, 'We have emerged from hell'," Debray said.

"This is huge for them because it's the first time in two-and-a-half years that they have been able to talk to someone other than a soldier or a police officer, apart from their fellow detainees."

16. Well, in that case the whole world is in big trouble
because as bad as America can be, it's still one of the better places to live. Yes, we have corruption, but so far we also have a Constitution and a democracy that enables us to find out about these things and do something about it.

21. If the US didn't exist
the role of immoral imperialist would simply be taken up by the next biggest bully, this shit isn't new.

although when I see claims like "it's still one of the better places to live" I always get a bit uncomfortable...unless you've lived in atleast several places I don't think you can make that judgement, and when it's made it's usually predicated on material concerns, not everyone puts the ability to buy 20 different types of washing powder high on the happiness scale.

Edited on Sun Aug-01-04 07:02 AM by jpgray
Where were they picked up, and what's the official line on them? If true we really might give Hitler a run for his money given a few more years.
