Gray Davis Fights Back
I searched the first five pages of GD and didn't see a thread discussing Gray Davis' speech at UCLA. So, since I feel sympathy for Gray and outrage at the attempted coup in California, I'm creating this one by excerpting the more notable portions of his speech. My apologies if it is a duplication.

Here it is:

...Viva California. ... I know California is going through a difficult time, and this is a challenging moment for all of us. I come here to take responsibility and set the record straight...

I inherited the energy deregulation scheme which put all of us at the mercy of the big energy producers.

We got no help from the federal government. ...when I was fighting Enron and the other energy companies, these same companies were sitting down with Vice President Cheney to draft a national energy strategy.

Recent federal investigations have proven that California was victimized by a massive fraud. Energy executives are on their way to jail.

Three years ago, I refused to give in to the pressure to raise rates astronomically. Everyone I talked to said "raise rates, raise rates, raise rates." I would not do it. ...I went to work, bought power, built new plants, encouraged conservation for the good people of this state and encouraged the use of clean energy.

I'm not looking for praise. We made our share of mistakes. ...if any of the Republicans in this recall campaign criticized the way we dealt with the energy crisis, you ask them specifically what they would have done...

...I'm not happy with the budget I signed recently. I said so then, I repeat that today. ...Republican legislators ...wanted to strip away health insurance benefits from 400,000 children of working parents rather than increase taxes on the wealthiest Californians.

...let me put our situation into perspective. The American economy has tanked. Over the last couple years, it has shed 3 million jobs and gone from record surpluses to record deficit; 46 other states are facing similar problems.

...let's be clear. Our increases on my watch went to education and health care, and I make no apology for that.

When I took office, we ranked near the bottom in per-pupil spending, 43rd to be specific. We are now 26, and we're making progress. ...the superintendent of public instruction announced dramatic improvement in student test scores for the fifth year in a row. ...

...those spending increases I mentioned during the early part of my term - health care and education - those increases were supported by Democrats and Republicans in Sacramento. ...Some Republicans accuse me of hiding the deficit. That is preposterous... state finances are a matter of public record. They're available to anyone who wants to see.

This recall is bigger than California. What's happening here is part of an ongoing national effort to steal elections Republicans cannot win.

It started with the impeachment of President Clinton, when the Republicans could not beat him in 1996. It continued in Florida, where they stopped the vote count, depriving thousands of Americans of the right to vote.

This year, they're trying to steal additional congressional seats in Colorado and Texas... Now they're trying to use this recall to seize control of California ...

They spent $3 million to put this recall on the ballot, but you're going to have to spend $65 million of your hard-working tax dollars to conduct that election. ...that money could be better spent educating our children.

...There are many reasons to be against this recall. It's expensive, it's undemocratic, it's a bad precedent, and it almost certainly will breed more recalls. ...

The Republicans behind this recall say they want you to oust me for past mistakes. ...they don't give a rip about past mistakes. This is all about control in the future, ...

...But make no mistake, I am going to fight this recall and the right-wing forces behind it. Take that to the bank. ...

...California has become a national leader again on the environment, and I will never allow California's strong environmental record to be reversed - not by Republicans, not by anyone. ...

...while the Bush administration spends its time peering into our bedrooms, our homes and our libraries, I have been working with Democratic legislators in Sacramento to pass the toughest financial privacy law in America. ...

Proposition 54 is another Republican effort to divide Californians over race. I am going to fight this initiative, ...

Now the budget problems we've been dealing with need a long-term fix. I have signed the budget. But we need a long-term fix. ...

There is much more that needs to be done in California. This election is about your future. I intend to fight for it, and I need your help.

...I may not be the warmest TV personality in politics, but I am warming to this fight. ...

...this right-wing power grab is something we won't get over. ...

...if you give me your help, I'll do everything in my power over the next three-and-a-half years to represent everyone in this great state - Democrats, Republicans and independents - to give our children the future they deserve. ...

..::Link::.

I don't live anywhere near CA, and I will be the first to admit ignorance of the details of Davis' reign. Nonetheless, I give him credit for fighting the good fight against these rabid rightwingers, and even more credit for the self-deprecating line about his reputation for having an aloof demeanor.

3. You're welcome.
I was impressed by his effort to take a stand and I thought it was important for other Dems to know what he said.

2. That's a hot speech. I really don't think he left anything out there.
I'd like to think Clinton gave him the courage to take it this direction.

4. He came out swinging...
I'm surprised DU Californians aren't all over the subject. Though he's not the most polished speaker, considering his beleaguered state, he did a good job.

5. Go Gray!
I'm glad to see him finnaly lash out at this absurd coup of my home state. Everything he said about the Repugs stealing elections is right on. Fuck those facists! I'm tired of the double standard and the time to fight is now! It is good to see/hear him speaking out against this "latest" outrage. Thanks for the post.

P.S. Davis got a bronze star in Viet Nam. Look it up.

Yes you are quite right. He is a hero and this is how we treat our heros. Nice isn't it? None of these other fat cat politicians (including Kerry) have a record even CLOSE to Gray Davis'!

VOTE NO ON THE RECALL! WE NEED GRAY DAVIS AS GOVERNOR!

18. Without knowing the particulars of his tour of duty I would say possibly
Edited on Fri Aug-22-03 10:33 AM by Bandit
he is a hero and maybe not. Bronze stars were handed out quite a bit for just being in a particular place at a particular time. There are two kinds of Bronze Stars. One for Meritorious service and one for valor. If he received the one for valor he indeed did something heroic however Kerry has a Silver Star and that is Always for something quite extraodinary. I don't know the particulars on either candidate but both are more heroic than any of their opponents. Hell Ahnold was in the German Army. Go figure????
I also thought Davis' Speach was very good. He is telling it like it is and now just needs for the people to hear him. It sounded a lot like Clinton did some heavy duty advising because it was quite upbeat.

8. Thank you for posting this . . .
Our local Fox news affiliate here in Seattle devoted a few seconds to this statement on last night's news. The anchor sneeringly mentioned that Davis labelled the recall "a right wing plot". I smelled a rat and immediately went searching for a transcript. No surprise . . . nothing about a "plot".

11. Here's a short, highly informative article on Davis' budget ............
Edited on Fri Aug-22-03 09:07 AM by Skinner
Please read, it was difficult to find what to snip out and I had to snip out good stuff. Apparently, everything that Swarzenagger is promising, Gray Davis has already done. (Ignore the title of the article, it doesn't quite describe the contents.)

In California, An Austrian Candidate Weighs In
Dan Ackman, 08.21.03, 10:18 AM ET

http://www.forbes.com/2003/08/21/cx_da_0821topnews_print.html

snip

One of the oddities of the coverage of the California recall election is that it largely ignored the new state budget voted on by the state's Legislature and signed by current Governor Gray Davis on Aug. 2.

snip

As always, the lion's share of the expenditures will be on education: $39.2 billion will be spent of K-through-12 schooling and another $4.6 billion will be spent on community colleges. These figures represent a $2.5 billion reduction in previous spending plans, though just a fraction of that reduction will come from actual program cuts. The state will spend $10.7 billion on higher education (including community colleges). This is a bit more than the previous year, though the increase is from higher student fees.

Thus, without taking office, the former Mr. Olympia has already delivered on his pledge not to cut education.

The candidate also promised that there will be cuts. Again, even before he said it, it's been done. The budget voted on promises a drop in general expenditures from $78.1 billion in 2002 to 2003, to $70.8 billion in 2003 to 2004, a 10% cut.

15. DAVIS & BUSTAMANTE Gave Good Speeches on 3-19
******QUOTE*****
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=203729&mesg_id=203729
Throughout the day wingnuts like Faux's John GIBSON (standing in for O'WHORELY on the radio)--------ridiculed Gray DAVIS for the announced speech for later in the day. GIBSON, who used to be such a nice boy when he worked for Court TV, and even later when he was the reporter for the SIMPSON trial on the Whorealdo show-----like Dennis MILLER who USED to be funny before metamorphosing as a wingnut-------sneered that DAVIS would apologize "like CLINTON" and grovel and beg for support and would do the predictable, but, gasp, sacriligious, namely BLAME SHRUB AND ENRON.

Well, I had never seen DAVIS present before, and had read the initial threads here when I saw the re-runs. Actually, at first he seemed to have a goofy uncle persona, waving his arms "conducting" an audience chant of "No recall, no recall" or something. But then there was no maudlin sentimentality. There was plain speaking, yes with goofy delivery, but after awhile the plain speaking won out and he made his case. Plus, he delivered a sentence with sincerity and near-power that should become our mantra: "Republicans STEAL ELECTIONS THEY CAN'T WIN!!!!"

Overall, it was an endearing performance. From far away from California, some of us have this image of CA as being sophisticated to the point of elitist. Yet both DAVIS and BUSTAMANTE spoke like down home, "normal" hometown people, with an unpolished sincerity.

BUSTAMANTE spoke similarly inelegantly, presenting his program with a slogan-name, appeared not quite in control of the numbers he was presenting, and when he caught himself missspeaking one word, would back up a whole phrase and READ it all again. And after going step by pedestrian step, he announced the end of it and what the grand total was.

He answered questions and DID appear a little condescending. Anyway, both these fellows said their piece and appeared to be on the level. The pressure is mounting on Ahhhnuld from all of the rest (BUSTA, Arianna, McCLINTOCK, SIMON) that each runner MUST speak to the issues specifically.

i hope the presidentials hopefuls pick this up.
i hate this fucking recall. it's going to cost money we don't have because of some rich repuke -- and as far as i'm concerned that's where the news is. spending money we don't have to oust a duly elected governor -- for nothing but pure political reasons.

25. It received good air time
They couldn't find any harmless snippet, though I imagine the response or followthrough of the media was like listening to the roll of the tumbleweeds and the chirruping of crickets. Many of these things needed to be pushed much earlier by more people more strongly since the three monkey Bush media gives no dissent any legs.

That's it exactly. For intellectually and emotionally balanced people everywhere, the important issue is always what is right. And, this recall is wrong.

Somewhere there was a chart that compared California's financial situation with the rest of the U.S. It showed CA doing just a little bit better. I wish I could find it.

27. Wow,a Dem with some guts?? Human or Alien??
Damn, maybe Davis and other Dems have been reading posts on this site and have finally discovered a spine and are TELLING THE FUCKING TRUTH,instead of winching when called a Liberal and cowering in the corner.

It might be to little to late but I hope he keeps pounding away with speeches like this one. Ummmm...BTW,how many other States that have REPIG Governors are in money troubles?? I haven't done a Google search but my guess would be a hell of a lot.

After eight years we finally dumped our Repub Gov in the last election, and Kansas is somewhere around 700 million ---1 Billion in debt. Yeah,Davis is the only Gov with a state in money trouble. Bull Fucking shit. Where the HELL are other Dems in office that need to be backing him up on TV and mainstream press???
