The mainstream media takes notice of Jon Stewart spanking Matthews!
From the Chicago Tribune
-snip-
Stewart's second great moment came on Thursday's show after various pundits had skewered the Rev. Al Sharpton for his long, fiery screed about the sacred history of the right to vote -- an issue that, given the problems in the 2000 presidential election, might have a modicum of relevance.

After a clip that showed MSNBC's Chris Matthews drowning out Sharpton's speech with his disapproval, Stewart opined, "Clearly, Chris Matthews and MSNBC had more important things to do than cover the content of a speech that galvanized the convention more than any other." Stewart then rolled a clip of Matthews previewing a chat with an actor from "The Sopranos."

1. Jon is getting more and more "props"
Tom Brokaw said last weekend that a poll showed a majority of 18-34 year olds cite "The Daily Show" as where they get their news.

2. The Daily Show beats out all other cable "news" shows
or channels.

To me, that's a sign that many people realize the bullshit eminating from the likes of Fox and Cnn and are looking for an alternative to all the garbage.

5. Yeah, it's pretty sad that a "comedy" show has more news content
than a few hours of Fox or CNN coverage.

9. Yes, and in that same vein
here in the Sacramento area we have "The Comic Press News", a monthly compilation of political cartoons that consistently reveal a lot of truth, and make you laugh!

16. thanks for that!
excellent site/;;;;;;;

bookmarking

the jesters, from ages past, are the ones upon whom to rely for the truth

realize that this Keller person is their cultural critic, and is always touting right wing sites, small circ right wing magazines, so this is quite a move for her

apparently, though, she's not a real watcher of the show, as she fails to note how much more he hounds the despicable thugs in power than he does the dems

she doesn't have a real feel for the show, any more than she knows anything about the kind of "culture" that doesn't fit her own conservative leanings

still, this was a nice PR boost for the show, and should get more people tune in to the only tv 'news' outlet easily available, other than CSPAN or BBC where one can get a daily dose of truth

14. That's because Jon does not lie like Brokaw does!
If NBC WANTED to tell the truth, they would hire Jon and his gang and fire all those lying GOP whores. One look at Brokaw and you know what a fucking liar that phony asshole is!

But NBC has too much invested in President Asshole and his Nazi pals...

and they won't have the time or inclination to read and find out the truth.
What would happen if they found out that reality is stranger than reality shows?

6. Unfortunately I have only seen The Daily Show
when I was in a cable-connected house. I loved it, and would put it on my short list of addictive shows. I was referring to Tweety stimulating interest in "The Sopranos". I know, I know, that's supposed to be a good show, too. Drugs and alcohol are fun, too. The more we are anesthetized the happier we'll be!

7. I'm skeptical that people who watch the Daily Show but don't
closely follow the news (unlike most people here) truly understand most of the bits.

Even the cast of the show says they don't want it to be a primary news source.

8. Media always treated Sharpton as an "entertainer."
I was just reading over that transcript of Hardball after, nay DURING, Sharpton's speech. Unbelievable.

I always suspected that the media merely vouchsafed Sharpton a place in the debates so they could use him for entertainment value. Now that he's continuing with his message and not just going away happy with the bone the media threw him, they act as they always do with entertainers who dare to speak about important issues. Venemously.

The media love to ride the wave to good ratings, but overstay your welcome, try to say something important, and brace yourself for their collective scorn. Guardians of the Elite indeed.

12. Like it or not, TDSWJS IS the most relevant mass-viewed news show
Not only does it lampoon all sides and avoid being a mouthpiece for either side, not only does it stay relevant, but Jon Stewart has the guts to ask the questions that we have been begging BigMedia, Inc. to ask all along! That's precisely what has gotten me hooked on the show: it goes past being funny, and actually does journalism as it was once practiced in this country by Murrow, Cronkite, Brinkley, and others. For example, Stewart's interview with Wolf Blitzer, where he pulled back the curtain of "objective journalist" that Blitzer hides behind and clearly revealed him to be a partisan voicebox for BushCo.
I wish we had journalists as good as Stewart on the news networks. Only one I can think of is Christianne Amanpour, and CNN keeps her away from commentary where she might really do some good.

15. the only news I get from the regular news channels is the scroll on CNN.
all the rest is "info-tainment". Not news anymore. Shame on them!

The Daily Show should be considered as much a news outlet as CNN-ABC-CBS-NBC.

18. here
Only television critics, for instance, would have conferred this year's prize for outstanding news and information programming to Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" — vaulting it over rivals like PBS' "Frontline" and ABC's "Nightline."

It was a decision made on both merit and message. As my cross-town rival, Melanie McFarland of the Post-Intelligencer, said when presenting the award, at a time when the mainstream media seem cowed, Jon Stewart and company embody "a core of truth."
